Popping up in Manhattan
Temporary shops all the rage this holiday season

By Marianne Wilson

(December 15, 2009) A flood of pop-up stores have appeared around Manhattan in recent weeks as companies, both big and small, try to capitalize on the holiday season without investing in year-round leases. It helps, of course, that merchants are having no trouble finding temporary spots, with retail vacancies still reeling from the recession.

With fixtures built from salvaged materials,  Here/Nau/NYC has a strong eco sensibility.

Here’s an update on some of the Big Apple’s holiday pop-ups:

Brooklyn Flea "Gifted" Market: This 6,500-sq.-ft. space features a cast of more than 50 rotating hipster vendors. (Lafayette Street, at 4th Street)

Here/Nau/NYC: The Portland-based eco-outfitter pops up in a lofty, green-minded Soho space built entirely from salvaged and recycled materials. The store carries Nau’s sustainable clothing line, along with goods from other environmentally-oriented brands. (69 Mercer St., nr. Broome Street)

JNBY: JNBY, which stands for "just naturally be yourself" has 500 stores in Europe and Asia, but this is its first spot in the United States. Reportedly, the brand is looking for a permanent space in the area and is planning to launch a wholesale business next year. (93 Mercer St, between Spring Street and Broome Street)

The Limited: Originally intended as a four-day event in October, the Limited pop-up  proved such a hit that its run was extended through the holiday season. (134 Spring St., nr. Wooster Street.)

Lionel Electric Trains: Lionel’s first-ever retail location features many of the company’s best-selling trains. Also for sale: limited-edition models signed by celebrities, with the proceeds going to charities. (30 Rockefeller Plaza, on 50th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues)

Only Hearts: Shop mixes unworn, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s with contemporary separates and lingerie.
(230 Mott St.)

Phaidon: British book publisher Phaidon brings its glossy coffee-table toppers to Soho. The 2,500-sq.-ft. space touts hundreds of weighty, photo-packed tomes on art, design, architecture, fashion, and food. (100 Wooster Street, nr. Prince Street.)

Under Armour: The 3,300-sq.-ft. store showcases the range of the company’s athletic apparel and accessories, and also displays several of the uniforms for the United States Olympic Team members who will be competing in Vancouver.  (3 W. 57th St., at Fifth Ave.)

Wired: The popular magazine’s pop-up features cool gadgets and gear, plus a range of gifts, from toys and housewares to music and books. (415 W. 13th St., nr. Ninth Ave.)
