Ellen DeGeneres addresses J.C. Penney controversy

New York City -- The popular television talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres said she was “proud and happy” that J.C. Penney remained committed to her after One Million Moms asked the retailer to dump her as a spokesperson because she is gay.

The group, a division of the conservative American Family Association, warned they would boycott J.C. Penney stores if the chain did not go along with their request.

DeGeneres addressed the issue on Tuesday at the taping of her television show. The show will air on Wednesday.

“They wanted to get me fired and I am proud and happy to say that J.C. Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson,” DeGeneres said.

The comedian said that “normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I’d like to talk about it because my haters are my motivators.”

The conservative group accused J.C. Penney of trying to appeal to a new target market by getting on board the “pro-gay bandwagon” with the hiring of DeGeneres.

"Being gay or pro-gay isn't a bandwagon,” DeGeneres said at the taping of her show. “You don't get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. And occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family’ but that’s about it.”

She also poked fun at the group, saying that the One Million Moms group “only has 40,000 members on their [Facebook] page. So they’re rounding up to the nearest million and I get that.”

DeGeneres has an estimated 9 million followers on Twitter.

I am not on facebook, but I am a member of AFA, we are a Christian group just trying to save ourselves from ourselves ! Believe me, there are a least a million Mom's who are concerned about Ms. DeGeneres lifestyle. We're in the business of saving our youth and hoping to put out positive character to represent the future. Ms. DenGenres has free will to choose whatever lifestyle she chooses. We don't agree with her lifestyle and stand on the morals and character of the Bible. Not ashamed of being a member of One Million Moms.

An association w Ellen is a great way for JCP to prove what it needs to prove as a brand: that it's part of the 21st century, in step with modern lives. The way the retailer and the star have handled the "controversy" of dunderheaded anti-gay hate speech will help build both "brands" in a positive way.

I think JCP did the right thing in regards to Ellen. I can respect anyone's point of view regarding religion, morality or even lunch. However, it's great to see a brand to a stand. The bigger question is if you cave to pressure from interest groups where do you stop? Blacks, Jews, Hindus, Irish or communists can set particular groups off. Many of these groups (Million Moms) have to realize they don't need to protect my children, my parents or my pets from what they believe is right wrong or out of their religious doctrine. Frankly, it's none of their business. The market will decide and in this case the market has given a thumbs up to Ellen. Nice job JCP

I find it appalling that we have people in this FREE country trying to boycott a company for choosing a spokesperson because they have a lifestlye unlike their own. Ellen sponsors many wonderful organizations. Whether I agree or believe in her lifestyle is irrelevant. She fights for worthwhile causes. To my knowledge she has never been convicted of a crime. She is an entertainer who has the right to make a living by being a sponsor for any organization she chooses. WHY do we continue to judge individuals for their sexual orientation? Are we going back to the days that we are entitled to have slaves because they are black. Is this the new form for racism? For heaven's sake, she is a person who is talented at what she does. She and JCP are not advocating being gay. They are trying to sell a product with a viable and entertaining spokesperson. That is their right. These people that are advocating the removal of Ellen because she is gay are the same people that are telling our President and our government to stay the hell out of our lives. Then LIVE how you Preach. Stay the hell out of a company company's right to make their own business decisions. This is AMERICA. Everyone has an inalienable right to be free and choose their own path. YOU are the problem.!!

Cool for you! And you have the right to raise your children as you see fit. BUT you do not have the right to raise our children as we see fit. Would you love your child less if he/she was gay? Ellen and JCP are not advocating being gay. They are trying to sell products. Shame on you for using the Bible as your sword. The Bible also teaches to love thy neighbor. Where did you forget that part of the Bible? I've been raised by Catholic parents, Catholic elementary school, high school and even a Catholic college.I have a normal and typical heterosexual family BUT that does not mean that I advocate that this is either good, bad or indifferent? People that are gay did NOT make a choice. It is WHO they are--period. No need to discuss. Do we need to explain why we are heterosexual?? I think NOT! Expand your mind, learn the facts, AND become a good Christian. We live in the 21st century where rights as humans should NOT be challenged. I don't believe that GOD would want us to trample or ignore his LOVE for us ALL!
