Memphis, Tenn. Fred's Inc. on Friday said its president and COO will both retire.

President John D. Reier, 68, and COO Gerald E. Thomson, 58, will leave as part of a planned succession plan, the company said. A new company president, Bruce Efird, began in September, but Reier and Thomson remained during the transition period.
