For awhile there it looked like the competitive rivalry between Target and Walmart would extend to the racetrack. However, a story last week on the website Bleacherreport.com cited an internal Walmart newsletter dispelling media reports that Walmart planned to get involved with Nascar. Target has a long-running and successful relationship with Nascar, as do many other retailers, most notably Home Depot, Lowe’s and Office Depot. It appeared Walmart was headed that direction too following an article in Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal. The article suggested Walmart was deep into negotiations with Hendrick Motorsports over sponsorship of Jeff Gordon’s number 24 Chevrolet as longtime sponsor DuPont’s deal is scheduled to end this year.
