585 Boardriders, a new retail concept from Quiksilver Inc., is designed as the ultimate destination for surfers and those who aspire to the surf-inspired lifestyle. Housing clothes and accessories from the company’s various brands, including Roxy and DC, the 10,000-sq.-ft. store also stocks an extensive selection of boards and wetsuits.
The design, by Verdego, Venice Beach, Calif., was inspired by the lifestyle of Venice and its surf and art culture, and has a strong link to the surrounding community. The industrial loft-like space has a fresh and airy ambiance, and is accented with an exposed boat-house ceiling, brick walls, steal I-beams and concrete floors. Materials used throughout the store evoke the calming waves of Southern California beaches, while art pieces handpicked at local flea markets decorate the walls. A 15-ft. LCD streaming video display near the rear showcases vintage footage of the 1970’s beach culture of Venice and Santa Monica’s Pacific Ocean Park Pier.
A skate area at the front of the store is reminiscent of an auto-body shop with large metal panels, a black framed ‘garage door’ area with shoes and merchandise. There is a sequential skating video footage above with a palette that reflects the Quiksilver skate brands and lifestyle.
Some 500 surfboards are displayed in the fully-equipped surf shop. The centrally located Roxy and QS girls’ area incorporates a lounge area and a bar made from vintage tiles.
The Gallery Space towards the rear entrance to the store functions as both a gallery and pop-up shop. It is a slightly separated space with its own steel and glass entrance and with floating steel panels will allow for changeable displays and events.
The design team decided to bring nature into the space by designing and building with Josh Rosen of Mark Tessier Landscape Architecture an interior garden of air plants with seating beneath and lit by one of the many skylights in the store. It features a series of floor to ceiling steel frames providing the armature for hundreds of plants.
