My latest retail IT-related travels took me to the Retail Experience Center at Microsoft headquarters (in Redmond, Washington), where I toured a simulated shopping mall environment that demonstrated a variety of innovative ways the company is using technology to enhance customer engagement for retailers.   Here are the three most interesting solutions from that visit:

It’s official – 2015 is the year of beacons. From supermarkets to museums, airports to retail shops, brands across industries are trying their hand at Bluetooth Low Energy technology to better connect with consumers and pass along timely information. Beacons are beneficial to brands, allowing them a more intimate connection to consumers, but to successfully implement, brands must embrace best practices for addressing audiences, making sure they’re adopting messaging strategy and cadence correspondent to shopper needs.

iBeacon technology, the Apple iOS 7 feature that helps mobile devices track their position relative to stationary beacons by using low-frequency Bluetooth transmissions, is getting quite a bit of attention from retailers. Grabbing their interest is not only that devices can obtain individualized information from beacons, but that beacons can also obtain individualized information from mobile devices.
