Verizon Wireless has set itself an ambitious goal: to transform the in-store experience across its entire fleet of 1,700 company-owned stores.

In November, the company unveiled its “destination store” format, in Mall of America, Bloomington, Minn. More than about selling phones and other devices, the 9,000-sq.-ft. store is designed to help customers experience a more robust mobile life.

That’s certainly true in the case of Pep Boys, which was founded in 1921 by four Navy buddies who pooled together $800 to open an auto parts store in Philadelphia. Today, with some 750 stores across the United States and Puerto Rico, the Philadelphia-based company is one of the nation’s leading auto supply and service providers.

Expansion was the talk of the aisles in the Las Vegas convention center, as the International Council of Shopping Centers hosted its annual RECon global real estate convention May 19-22.

"We never really had a downturn," said Stephen Gallant, VP facilities development with Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, in the Women's Special Interest Group presentation "Retail: The Next Wave."

"We opened an average of 50 stores a year during the recession, and are continuing to gather strength in the more recent months and years," he noted.
