Cabela’s announces plans for store in Calgary
Sidney, Neb. — Cabela’s Incorporated announced today plans to open a store in Calgary, Alberta. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with a fall 2015 opening.
The 70,000-sq.-ft. store will be located adjacent the Deerfoot Mall, which is currently under plan review as an open air shopping center redevelopment project.
It will be Cabela’s third location in Alberta, joining two locations in Edmonton, which opened in 2011 and May of this year.
“Alberta has been great to Cabela’s,” said Tommy Millner, Cabela’s CEO. “Our two Edmonton locations have received tremendous support. It is time to expand to Calgary and better serve the loyal Cabela’s customers in southern Alberta.”
The store will be built in Cabela’s next-generation layout, designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience with museum-quality wildlife displays and a large mountain replica.
Currently, Cabela’s operates 58 stores across North America, including five in Canada – Winnipeg; Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan; and two Edmonton locations. The company has announced plans to open an additional 20 stores over the next two years, including locations in Barrie, Ontario, July 10; Nanaimo, British Columbia, this fall; and Moncton, New Brunswick, in 2015.
Report: Carrefour to shutter Indian stores
Mumbai, India – In a move that may have implications for Wal-Mart, French retailer Carrefour S.A. will reportedly shutter its five Indian wholesale stores by the end of September 2014. According to Reuters, Carrefour is in advanced talks to sell its Indian assets to an unspecified buyer.
Wal-Mart pulled out of an Indian retail partnership in late 2013, but still plans to operate cash & carry wholesale stores there and also recently launched an e-commerce operation there. India has technically been open direct foreign investment in domestic retail supermarkets since 2012, but rules vary by state and there are strict local sourcing regulations.
