Ace Hardware launches ‘Meet the Aces’ marketing campaign

BY Katherine Boccaccio

Oak Brook, Ill. — Ace Hardware said Tuesday it has unveiled a new marketing campaign, Meet the Aces, designed to promote the hardware co-op/retailer’s personal service.

The new campaign also reintroduces, for the first time in more than 15 years, the words of Ace’s iconic jingle, “Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man,” but changed slightly (from “man” to “folks”) to reflect all Ace associates.

The marketing campaign will employ strategic, integrated marketing initiatives, including national television and print advertising, targeted online and radio spots, rich media, social media, in-store signage, emails to members of the Ace Rewards customer loyalty program, and public relations initiatives.

Meijer expands Made in Michigan initiative

BY Staff Writer

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Meijer has expanded its program that supports Michigan small businesses to feature 55 new Michigan-made grocery products in all its stores statewide, Meijer co-chairman Doug Meijer announced Tuesday.

"Meijer is committed to supporting Michigan businesses, and the Made in Michigan initiative is a great opportunity to highlight some fantastic small businesses throughout the state," Meijer said. "The response we received from our customers last year about this initiative was overwhelming, which is why we decided to further invest and expand this selection into all our Michigan stores."

Meijer launched the Made in Michigan initiative in January 2012 with the Michigan State University Product Center for Food-Ag-Bio. Its goal is to help strengthen the state’s economy by supporting Michigan small businesses. The initial offering of 49 grocery items – including marinara sauce, blueberry butter and gluten-free baking mixes – resulted in an estimated economic impact of $400,000 statewide.

This year’s lineup of 55 Michigan-made grocery products will be more visible in all of the 102 Meijer stores in Michigan. Items including barbeque sauces, cherry butter, salsas, guacamole and kettle chips are expected to have an estimated economic impact of $900,000 statewide said Matt Birbeck, High Impact Venture Action Team project manager for the MSU Product Center.

"It’s been a fantastic opportunity for all Michigan businesses to have this local section at Meijer; many of them see amazing results," Birbeck said. "Now that it’s in every Michigan Meijer store, everybody gets to see and taste the diversity of this great state."

Meijer worked with the MSU Product Center and its HI-VAT initiative to expand the program and ensure that all the suppliers had the right food protocols and supply chain procedures. The items are expected to remain on the shelves for a year, and will have an opportunity to branch out chain-wide. Of the initial items that were featured in 33 Meijer stores last year, a few products are under consideration to be mainstreamed onto the shelves as part of the retailer’s regular grocery offerings.

Walgreens updates mobile app

BY Staff Writer

Deerfield, Ill. — Walgreens has announced several updates to its mobile app, most notably the ability to print from Instagram, as well as upload more than five pictures simultaneously for in-store prints. The updates apply to iPhones and Android devices.

“We know that many people enjoy customizing their photos to reflect the uniqueness of each shot,” said Jasbir Patel, senior director and general merchandise manager, photo and e-commerce, Walgreens. “Aligning our QuickPrints technology to Instagram helps our customers make those digital images come to life in print form.”

In addition to the robust functionality available, the specific updates include:

  • Print from Instagram: Easily print Instagram photo creations to a local Walgreens for pick up in about an hour.
  • QuickPrints: Users can now upload more than five pictures at a time to send to their local Walgreens for prints.
  • Poster Prints: Android customers can order poster prints and pick up in stores in about an hour. iPhone users also can access the functionality.
  • Health Information: Access diabetes, diet and fitness and women’s health information while on the go.
  • Pill Reminder: Android customers can set reminders to take over-the-counter and prescription medications. iPhone users also can access the functionality.

On a related note, Walgreens was recently awarded an Appy for the Best Retail Mobile App during this year’s SXSW Interactive Conference.
