Ahold purchases Dutch online retailer

New York City — Royal Ahold NV has agreed to acquire bol.com, the Netherlands’ largest online retailer, for about $470 million in cash.

“Bol.com provides us with the platform, scale and expertise we need to accelerate our growth in online retailing,” said Dick Boer, CEO, Ahold. “Its capabilities and operations in nonfood categories will broaden our assortment and increase our online presence, adding to the existing online food offering through albert.nl. Together, we will be able to offer customers more choice, greater convenience and better value.”

Safeway names president of Dominick’s

Pleasanton, Calif. — Safeway has named Brian Baer president of its Dominick’s Finer Foods division in the Chicago area.

Baer had been acting president of Dominick’s since last July when the previous president, Don Kperta, resigned.

Baer joined Safeway in 2001 as VP finance for the company’s Phoenix division. In 2008, he was appointed CFO at Dominick’s.

Domino’s Pizza extends mobile offering with new app

Ann Arbor, Mich. — Domino’s Pizza is launching its brand new Android smartphone ordering app. With the launch, and in addition to its existing iPhone app which debuted last June, Domino’s will now offer its mobile ordering app to more than 80% of smartphones.

The new app, which is compatible with Android version 2.1 and higher, extends many of the features of Domino’s online ordering platform including: coupon search, full national menu, GPS store locator and the ability to follow orders with Domino’s Tracker.

The Android application joins an already successful mobile and online ordering platform. Domino’s app for iPhone and iPod touch achieved $1 million in total sales in just 28 days, and just three months after its release, the app achieved more than $1 million in sales in a single week. Mobile ordering, along with traditional online ordering, makes up 30% of Domino’s sales.
