Alliance Data signs multi-year renewal agreement with Crate and Barrel

Dallas — Alliance Data Systems Corp., a provider of loyalty and marketing solutions derived from transaction-rich data, announced its Retail Services business has signed a multi-year renewal agreement to continue providing the private label credit card program for multichannel home furnishings retailer Crate and Barrel.

This year, in partnership with Alliance Data, Crate and Barrel introduced a rewards-based credit card that allows customers to earn rewards across all three brands: Crate and Barrel, CB2 and The Land of Nod.

For every $200 spent at Crate and Barrel, CB2 or The Land of Nod, customers will receive a $10 reward that can be used at any of the three brands. In addition to rewards, the program provides cardholders special financing and access to other exclusive cardholder offers. Alliance Data will support Crate and Barrel with new card issuance and ongoing marketing programs targeted at cardholders in order to help the company grow and retain a strong, loyal customer base.

“We are excited to continue to evolve the Crate and Barrel credit card by rewarding our best customers for their loyalty,” said Jennifer Olsen, chief marketing officer of Crate and Barrel.

Walmart expands health benefits to cover heart and spine surgeries with no out-of-pocket costs

Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart is expanding its Centers of Excellence program to offer its associates health care with no out-of-pocket cost for heart, spine, and transplant surgeries at six of the nation’s leading hospital and health systems.

"We devoted extensive time developing Centers of Excellence in order to improve the quality of care our associates’ receive," said Sally Welborn, senior VP of global benefits at Walmart. "We have identified six renowned health care systems that meet the highest quality standards for heart, spine and transplant surgery. Through these hospital systems, our associates will have no out-of-pocket expenses and a greater peace of mind knowing they are receiving exceptional care from a facility that specializes in the procedure they require. This is the first time a retailer has offered a comprehensive, nationwide program for heart, spine and transplant surgery."

The six designated health care organizations include the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland; Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.; Mayo Clinic sites in Rochester, Minn., Scottsdale/Phoenix, Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla.; Mercy Hospital Springfield in Springfield, Mo; Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas; and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash.

The new Centers of Excellence program is being expanded from covering transplants, which began with the Mayo Clinic in 1996, to include treatment for certain heart and spine surgeries. Walmart’s associates and their dependents who are enrolled in the company’s medical plans will receive consultations and care covered at 100 percent without deductible or coinsurance, plus travel, lodging and food for the patient and a caregiver.

Survey: Mobile devices to get big play over the holidays

Petaluma, Calif. — Research results released Wednesday by multichannel commerce solution-provider MarketLive found that mobile will be used heavily for researching deals, making purchases and connecting with merchants across channels this holiday season.

According to the annual "Mindset of a Multi-Channel Shopper" survey, in 2012, customers will spend about the same amount on holiday gifts as last year—but a greater share of that spending will be online.

Of the more than 1,000 shoppers surveyed, 33% said they will do ‘All’ or ‘Most’ of their shopping on the Internet this holiday season. That’s a significant jump from last year’s 25%.

The survey revealed that 16% of consumers plan to do ‘All’ or ‘Most’ of their shopping via a smartphone or tablet this holiday season — that’s up from just 3% who planned to shop via mobile device last year. And 29% (up from 12% in 2011) said they’ll use their mobile phone to research gifts prior to a store visit. Also, 43% of the shoppers surveyed said they are ‘Very’ or ‘Somewhat’ likely to use their mobile devices for redeeming coupons when making an in-store purchase.

When asked about the most important factors in choosing merchants to shop online this season, ‘Good Value’ was number one with 87% of the shoppers saying that value was ‘Most’ or ‘Somewhat’ important. Price came in second, with 85%.

Across the board, shoppers placed more importance on the reasons they shop online than they did last year. Saving money, locating hard-to-find products, and saving time ranked as the most important reasons for shopping online for the majority of shoppers. However, shoppers are also placing more importance than ever on:

Online peer recommendations/reviews (45% of shoppers said these are ‘Very’ or ‘Somewhat Important’ this year as opposed to 34% last year) and finding more personalized gifts (50% of shoppers said this was a ‘Very’ or ‘Somewhat Important’ reason for buying online, versus only 41% last year).
