Barnes & Noble to open flagship on Manhattan’s Upper East Side
New York City Barnes & Noble will open a two-level, 55-sq.-ft. flagship on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, on June 19.
Special enhancements for the new store include an advanced cash wrap queuing system, a custom neighborhood mural in the store’s lobby with a video wall and video streams of live information and entertainment displayed on video walls throughout the store, and stroller parking in the B&N Jr. section for families on the go.
Natural Grocers opens first Utah store
Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage opened its first Utah location in Tuesday, in St. George, Utah, according to a report in southwest Utah publication Main Street Journal.
The independent grocery chain sells natural and organic products. It operates 32 stores in Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.
In April the chain announced it would be among the first grocers in the nation to go completely “bag-free,” offering no paper or plastic shopping bags at any of its stores.
Smashburger reveals aggressive expansion plans
Grand Junction, Colo.
On Monday, privately held fast-food chain Smashburger opened its first franchise stores in Grand Junction, Colo., launching what the company said is a 40-unit expansion in 2009 via franchising, according to QSR Magazine.
The 14-unit chain has stores slated to open in Minnesota, Texas, Oklahoma, Utah and Idaho later this year, as well as more stores in Colorado, the report said.
The retailer said it plans to open about 200 franchise locations in the next few years, including a deal with multi-unit operator SB Alamo Development, LLC for 45 units in Texas and New Mexico. The first two stores in that deal will open in San Antonio, Texas, during the next few weeks.
