Ben & Jerry’s Testing Green Freezers
Burlington, Vt. Ben & Jerry’s is introducing a cleaner, greener freezer for testing in the United States with the hope that it will eventually be approved for long-term use.
The company announced the launch of a pilot project testing hydrocarbon-based freezers that are designed to minimize the freezer’s impact on global warming. The featured technology is currently allowed in every country except the United States.
“This is an important step for our business which we hope will clearly demonstrate that a more environmentally friendly refrigeration technology can work in the U.S. market,” said Walt Freese, CEO, Ben & Jerry’s. “The technology is commonplace in Europe with literally millions of home and commercial units in place.”
Ben & Jerry’s has approval to test up to 2,000 freezers in the next few years. The debut installation took place in the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.
Auto Care Co. is Earth Friendly
Scottsdale, Ariz. (Oct. 22) Honest-1 Auto Care Co. announced that it plans to double its 19 existing nationwide franchises within one year. The full-service auto-repair chain, which calls itself 100% eco-friendly, said it is implementing rigorous internal standards so that it can remain “the leader in eco-friendly automotive service.”
The company employs strict regulations for recycling auto materials, pollution prevention, resource conservation and trademarked services such as ECO TuneUp and ECO Oil Change.
Wal-Mart Commits to Making Stores in China More Eco-Friendly
(Oct. 22) Wal-Mart Stores announced a major effort to make Wal-Mart China a leader in sustainability in China by committing to make its stores more sustainable. The company will design and open a new store prototype that uses 40% less energy and will reduce energy use at existing stores by 30% by 2010.
In addition, during the next two years, Wal-Mart China will aim to cut water use in all of its stores in half by investing in new hardware and systems and developing best practices that will help its associates and stores use water more efficiently.
The company also pledged to bring more environmentally sustainable products to its store shelves.
