Best Buy to cut 2,400 jobs, including 600 Geek Squad members

New York – Best Buy is cutting 2,400 employees, including 1,800 store employees and 600 Geek Squad technical support associates, employees, as it seeks to restructure operations, the Associated Press reported.

The layoffs amount to about 1.4% of the company’s total staff of 167,000. A Best Buy spokesman, Bruce Hight, said the cuts were part of the company’s “ongoing turnaround plan,” according to the report.

Nike names new president of Jordan brand

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Larry Miller is rejoining Nike as president of the Jordan brand, the company announced Monday. Miller will be responsible for driving the global growth strategy for all aspects of the Jordan brand and will report directly to Trevor Edwards, VP global brand and category management for Nike. Miller replaces Keith Houlemard, who will now lead the company’s future worldwide Olympic efforts as general manager where he will be responsible for driving category and brand management strategies supporting key sports marketing partnerships and business across the globe.

Miller, 61, most recently served as president of the Portland Trail Blazers. From 1999 to 2006, Miller served as president of the Jordan Brand and prior to that position, he served as VP and general manager of Nike Basketball, where he managed operations for Jordan, Nike Basketball and Converse.

“The Jordan Brand inspires consumers around the world with exceptional products and premium experiences while celebrating the culture of sport,” said Edwards. “The Jordan Brand continues to drive strong momentum in the marketplace and we look forward to Larry expanding our market leadership while delivering Jordan Brand experiences that connect deeply with future generations.”

Topco names general counsel

SKOKIE, Ill. — Topco Associates announced that Andrew Broccolo has joined the company as general counsel. In this new position Broccolo, 46, will report directly to Topco president and CEO Randy Skoda.

“I’m thrilled that Andy is now part of our leadership team,” Skoda said. “Andy will be instrumental in helping Topco effectively manage risk while also providing sound legal advice that assists us in driving our day-to-day business of delivering value to the association’s 52 members.”

Broccolo has worked in both public and private practice for more than 15 years, including positions with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Sayers40 and Vedder Price Kaufman & Kammholz. Most recently, he has been advising corporate clients on real estate transactions, supplier agreements, governance, employment law and litigation matters.

Broccolo received his undergraduate degree from Miami University and his law degree from The John Marshall Law School.
