Best Buy’s U.S. retail chief retires; HR head to assume responsibilities

New York — Best Buy Inc.’s president of U.S. retail stores, Shawn Score, 48, has retired, effective immediately, after spending 29 years with the company. His responsibilities will be assumed by Best Buy’s chief human resources officer, Shari Ballard.

Ballard joined Best Buy in 1993, and has served in a variety of executive positions, moving into the HR position in 2013. Ballard will continue to head up human resources in addition to taking on the new duties.

Prior to leading the U.S. retail unit of Best Buy, Score served as president of Best Buy Mobile.

Modell’s names former Victoria’s Secret exec to lead digital strategy

New York — Modell’s Sporting Goods announced it has hired Deborah Fine to fill a newly created role on its executive leadership team, chief commercial officer. Among other duties, Fine will head up the retailer’s digital strategy, transforming Modell’s into an Omnichannel retailer.

“These initiatives will be developed from a customer point of view, ensuring a consistent and best in class experience in our stores and on our website,” the company stated. “Our digital presence will expand beyond Modells.com, growing our social media footprint as well as developing new interactive digital experiences for our customers. Deborah will ensure alignment of initiatives across the organization to achieve our digital goals.”

Most recently, Fine served as CEO of Direct Brands, the largest member-based retailer for media products in the United States. Prior to that, she was at NBC Universal Digital Media where she was president, iVillage Properties, the world’s first and largest online community for women, with 27 million members across the globe.

Fine’s career also includes time as CEO of Victoria’s Secret Pink brand.

Jewel-Osco names VP operations

Itasca, Ill. — Jewel-Osco has appointed Scott Hays as VP operations for the Chicagoland supermarket chain.

Most recently a district manager with Albertsons LLC’s Southern division, Hays will lead the operations team to support Jewel-Osco’s marketing and merchandising initiatives, including the company’s upcoming remodels and opening their five newly acquired Dominick’s locations.

“Scott’s years of experience with Albertsons combined with his vast knowledge of the grocery industry will enable him to mentor and educate his team to reach the highest level of excellence,” stated Shane Sampson, Jewel-Osco president. “He empowered stores to set the bar on operating standards for their market areas, illustrating the highest expectations of quality merchandising and continually striving for what is best for our customers and their neighborhoods.”
