Carrefour to Invest in Russia
Paris Carrefour SA said Monday it has agreed to invest $100 million in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia over the next five years as part of its plan to branch out in the former Soviet republic.
Carrefour, seeking to accelerate growth in high-potential markets, is building two stores in Russia—one in Moscow and one in Krasnodar—which it hopes to open late this year or early next year, and has plans for least another five openings in 2009.
Gap Inc. expands international presence
SAN FRANCISCO In another move to expand its international presence, Gap Inc. has announced that Mexico’s leading department store chain will have exclusive rights to sell Gap brand merchandise in a franchise “store-within-a-store” concept.
The company signed a franchise agreement with Distribuidora Liverpool, S.A. DE C.V. and plans to begin selling products in the spring of 2009. Gap Inc. had previously worked with Liverpool through a wholesale agreement and during that time introduced Gap brand apparel in a limited manner to customers in Mexico.
The company also announced today that it has expanded its relationship with Fawaz Alhokair Group to include franchise agreements for Gap and Banana Republic in Egypt and Jordan. Fawaz Alhokair Group recently opened Gap and Banana Republic stores in Saudi Arabia and will now open stores in Egypt and Jordan over the next five years. The first Gap stores are expected to open in Egypt and Jordan for the 2008 holiday season. The first Banana Republic stores are expected to open in Jordan in the spring of 2009 and in Egypt for the 2009 fall season.
Shopko targets moms with new apparel offerings
GREEN BAY, Wis. Shopko announced that, beginning this month, it will carry Sag Harbor, Gloria Vanderbilt, Norton McNaughton, and Briggs New York brands to target women, particularly mothers.
The brands, according to Shopko, include a variety of workplace and casual styles.
In addition, Shopko is adding national brands to its accessories area with Sag Harbor handbags and a collection of fashion jewelry by Nine & Co., a division of Nine West.
“Our customers have told us they want more fashionable and relevant clothing, and we are excited to bring these national brands to the Shopko customer,” said Jill Soltau, Shopko senior vp of general merchandise and manager of apparel and accessories. “We will continue to respond to the needs of our customers, building on Shopko’s commitment to deliver great merchandise and value.”
