Charming Charlie’s exec named VP chief merchant of Dressbarn
Suffern, N.Y. — Ascena Retail Group announced that Judith Langley has joined dressbarn as executive VP and chief merchandising officer.
Langley brings to Dressbarn extensive experience as a senior merchant and in product development. Most recently, she was executive VP and chief merchandising officer with Charming Charlie’s, a jewelry and accessories chain.
Previously, she was senior VP of design and trend at Kohl’s, where she oversaw product direction for 15 brands.
“Judi’s track record as a successful merchant with design expertise will be a tremendous asset to Dressbarn,” said Jeff Gerstel, president of Dressbarn. “I am pleased to welcome Judi to Dressbarn’s team and look forward to the leadership, creativity, and vision she will bring to our brand’s transformation.”
Games, giveaways, book signings and personalized recommendations will be offered as part of “Discovery Friday,” event Barnes & Noble has planned for Nov. 22 to pre-empt the doorbuster madness that will occur the following week on Black Friday.
All of the retailer’s stores nationwide will participate in the Discovery Friday event which Barnes & Noble said was created to serve as the official launch of the holiday shopping season and help customers experience the thrill of discovering the perfect gifts for friends and family. On Discovery Friday, Barnes & Noble’s said its booksellers will be on the front lines to provide personalized recommendations at its nearly 700 stores, an experience that Amazon.com can’t rival.

Nordstrom Rack to open its first South Carolina store
Seattle — Nordstrom plans to open a Nordstrom Rack at Magnolia Park in Greenville, S.C. The approximately 32,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to open in fall 2014. Magnolia Park is being developed by Menin Development.
The Magnolia Park Nordstrom Rack will be the company’s first location in South Carolina.
"We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to bring a Nordstrom Rack closer to home for customers in South Carolina," said Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. "Magnolia Park is an excellent location and we look forward to earning the business of customers there when we open our doors next fall."
Nordstrom Rack joins a growing list of retailers filling out the final phase of development at Magnolia Park. When complete, the center will offer customers 800,000 sq. ft. of retail, dining and entertainment. Current tenants include Costco, Regal Cinemas, Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us.

Peapod and Giant Food Stores open new fulfillment center
New York — Online food retailer Peapod and Giant Food Stores have opened a new fulfillment center in Coopersburg, Pa.

Residents and businesses in more than 25 ZIP codes, including Doylestown, Quakertown and Coopersburg, will be able to shop for fresh fruits and vegetable, seafood, meat and dairy as well as bestselling national brands and Giant private-label products online at peapod.com. They’ll also earn Giant Gas Extra Rewards and A+ School Rewards for their online purchases.
Shoppers can use Peapod’s mobile app to shop from their laptop, tablet or smartphone. They can also create personal lists, read nutrition information online and sort products rapidly by price or by nutrition criteria. Giant BonusCard users can jumpstart their first shop online from a list of items they have bought at their local Giant simply by entering their card number online. Groceries can be delivered as soon as the next day after the order is placed.
