Design Firms Merge

New York City, Design firms Fitch and WalkerGroup announced their intention to form a single multidisciplinary firm, with a name yet to be determined. The firms, which are both in the family of companies owned by marketing communications group WPP Group plc, will keep all of their studios open and combine their expertise and portfolio on a global platform.

WalkerGroup’s New York City and Los Angeles offices will join Fitch’s 18 global studios.

Amazon.com Launches Emergency Preparedness Store

Seattle, Amazon.com opened its new emergency preparedness store within its existing tools and hardware store, which offers a collection of over 800,000 tools and accessories. With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicting a very active 2006 hurricane season, Amazon.com’s new emergency preparedness store hopes to boost sales by offering a single shopping destination for tools, communication devices, first aid supplies, safety equipment and more to coincide with the first day of hurricane season.

Masterfoods to Become Mars Again

New York City, Masterfoods North America dropped its name after five years and is called, once again, Mars. The initial name change to Masterfoods from Mars, Incorporated intended to leverage the company’s $18 billion in disparate businesses under a single umbrella brand, AdAge.com reported. Mars changed its corporate name to Masterfoods North America and began centralizing its three top divisions, but now it plans to decentralize its divisions. However, the consumer will probably not notice the move from Masterfoods, except in packaging, AdAge.com said.
