Discovery Communications names new COO
SILVER SPRING, Md. Discovery Communications announced the appointment of Peter Liguori as COO, reporting to president and CEO David Zaslav. He replaces Mark Hollinger, who has assumed the role of president and CEO of Discovery Networks International. Liguori will join Discovery on Jan. 19, 2010. Most recently, Liguori was president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.
As president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company, Liguori was responsible for all Fox program development and marketing. Prior to assuming that position in 2005, Liguori was president and CEO of News Corp.’s FX Networks since 1998, overseeing business and programming operations for FX and Fox Movie Channel.
Macy’s declares Dec. 11 National Believe Day
NEW YORK In its latest promotion of its “Believe” campaign, Macy’s has declared Dec. 11 National Believe Day.
To promote Believe Day, in select cities, 19th Century newsboy street teams will be handing out $25 Macy’s gift cards. In addition, all stores will have special mailboxes for letters to Santa. For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation up to $1 million. And, those lucky enough to be named Virginia will receive a $10 Macy’s gift card, while supplies last, in honor of Virginia O’Hanlon of the famous New York Sun editorial that inspired Macy’s Believe campaign.
BJs announces holiday deals
NATICK, Mass. BJs is promoting its selection for the holidays, with special deals on video games, home appliances and electronics.
“BJ’s Wholesale Club has gifts that pack a Wow! for all ‘the kids’ on your shopping list,” said Chris Neppl, EVP merchandising at BJ’s Wholesale Club. “Whether they like interactive games, sound systems and televisions or educational electronics and small appliances, we have a tremendous range of budget-friendly gifts for all those near and dear, no matter the age.”
In the video game category, the company is offering such deals as “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for $54.99 and Tony Hawk Ride for $109.99. For those in need of a home appliance gift, BJ’s said it is offering a Cuisinart Automatic Breadmaker for $74.99 and a Rival Crock-Pot Trio for $78.99, among other deals. The company is also offering discounts on digital cameras and educational toys.
