Dollar General opens 11,000th store
Goodlettsville, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. has opened its 11,000 store, marking itself as the retailer with the most stores in the United States.
The st0re is located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Dollar General said it anticipates opening 650 new stores in 2013. The company plans to create 6,000 new jobs in 2013.

RadioShack opens two additional new concept stores in Manhattan
New York — RadioShack unveiled a store remodeled to its new high-touch format, in Manhattan, with an additional Big Apple location set to open on Oct. 12. The format incorporates interactive areas designed to help shoppers improve their technology profile. The chain premiered the design in July, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Features of RadioShack’s updated design include:
Newly configured displays highlighting in-demand brands like Apple, HTC and Samsung, as well as mobile carriers such as AT&T, Sprint and Verizon;
Store fixtures that enable shoppers to find and compare products, including a “Speaker Wall” that allows customers to demo speakers by playing music from their own Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices;
Technology that makes shopping interesting and playful, like touchscreens and apps that help shoppers understand the benefits of products;
In addition to the Manhattan locations, RadioShack has also opened new concept locations in nearby Jersey City, N.J., and in Southampton on Long Island.
Radio Shack’s Manhattan Mall location was also remodeled this summer as one of its new, scalable "brand statement" stores, which feature many updates inspired by the spirit of the concept stores. The company plans to open or remodel a number of additional New York-area locations by the end of the year.
Walgreens launches financial services in select markets
Deerfield, Ill. — Walgreens announced it is launching a full suite of integrated financial services, Balance Financial, in phases over the coming months. The services are all built around the chain’s new Balance Financial Prepaid MasterCard.
Balance Financial is currently offered to customers of more than 250 Walgreens locations in Detroit, Milwaukee, and Nashville, with a nationwide card rollout expected before year end and additional financial services in 2014.
Balance Financial is powered by Galileo, a leader in advanced payment processing solutions.
“Millions of Americans do not have — or want alternatives to — traditional checking accounts and debit cards,” said Jason Dubinsky, Walgreens VP and treasurer. “For them, Balance Financial will represent safety, convenience, value and rewards. With Balance Financial as our platform, over time we plan to add more features and functionality that give our customers even more powerful financial tools to get, stay and live well.”
Balance Financial is a collaboration of Walgreens, MasterCard, Galileo and FIS. In addition, Western Union services are expected to be available in 2014.
