Efficiency upgrades reduce energy costs $1.2 million annually for 621 7-Eleven stores

Henderson, Nev. — Efficiency upgrades at 621 7-Eleven stores in California, Washington, and Oregon, will result in an anticipated energy savings of approximately $1.2 million annually.

The upgrades were completed by Castrovilla, a subsidiary of Blue Earth, an energy efficiency and renewable energy services company. The project involved the installation of energy efficient electronically commutated motors, anti-sweat heater controls, evaporator fan controls, gaskets, door closers and strip curtains.

Castrovilla also secured approximately $1.3 million in rebates from various West Coast utilities. The utility incentives offset 100% of both the material and installation costs, which resulted in no out of pocket costs for 7-Eleven. The projected energy savings exceed 9 million kWh and will reduce energy expenses some $9.5 million over the effective useful life of the equipment.

Study to explore retail crime potential of new point-of-sale technology

Fayetteville, Ark. — Researchers at the University of Arkansas’s business school are looking into the potential for criminals to exploit new retail technologies like mobile coupons and touchless payment, the university said Tuesday.

The researchers, from the university’s Walton College of Business, will work with the Retail Industry Leaders Association to address risks associated with the new technologies.

“Retailers are quickly adapting to customers who are increasingly wired, self-sufficient and seeking convenience,” associate professor of supply chain management John Aloysius said. “Given the retail focus of the Walton College, we look forward to discovering what this impact will be and to helping our industry partners.”

The researchers will compile study findings in a report and then build a risk-assessment checklist that retailers can use at stores to mitigate risks related to theft.

“We need to get out in front of this emerging trend now to position ourselves so that we can proactively address the challenges that lie ahead, rather than reacting to challenges once these emerging point-of-sale technologies become the norm,” RILA VP loss prevention and legal affairs Lisa LaBruno said.

RCS retained by Diamond Wireless for portfolio optimization and more

New York — RCS Real Estate Advisors said Tuesday it has been retained by Diamond Wireless, a mall-based retailer and one of six National Premium retailers for Verizon Wireless, to provide advice and performance analysis to the retailer in the management of its real estate portfolio.

As Diamond Wireless continues to expand nationally, RCS said it is charged with ensuring that Diamond’s current and future site selections, which include both inline stores and kiosks, deliver the highest and best value and efficiencies available in the mall marketplace today.

The retailer currently operates out of 33 strip mall locations, 33 inline stores, 133 kiosks, and three mall carts for a total of 202 locations.
