Family Dollar deploys real estate solution

Matthews, N.C. — Discount retailer Family Dollar is utilizing TAS Unity, a browser-based enterprise market knowledge system designed to aid retail real estate management from Trade AreaSystems.

Since deployment in September 2012, Family Dollar has used TAS Unity across desktop, online and mobile platforms to improve visibility and collaboration for real estate decision-making. The solution specifically assists the chain in areas such as site evaluation, mapping and demographics, data viewing and editing, and capturing notes and photos for attachment to specific stores on the map retrieval system.

Family Dollar may extend use of TAS Unity to other areas of the company including marketing, pricing and store operations.

"We are currently in the process of creating a way to increase the knowledge of our preferred developers and brokers utilizing TAS,” said Brian Strickland, divisional VP of portfolio management at Family Dollar. “This was one of those developments we didn’t see coming – the users are finding tremendous value from the system and they want our real estate partners to have access to the same information.”

Harley-Davidson rides with Craftsman

Craftsman and Harley-Davidson have teamed up to produce co-branded, special-edition tool storage products available now in Sears stores and online.

As part of the partnership, Craftsman — the tool brand owned by Sears Holdings — has been named the official hand and power tool sponsor of the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary Celebration.

"Working with Harley-Davidson is a natural association for the Craftsman brand," said Michael Castleman, president, Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard and SVP, Sears Holdings. "With similar roots steeped in the heart of the American garage, we share the passion for the ingenuity and freedom that drive our customers. Together, we are leveraging marketing, community and product assets to broaden the reach of our great brands, including outreach to both the Craftsman Club and Harley Owners Group."

Three special-edition Craftsman/Harley-Davidson co-branded tool storage units are available now. All units feature a black frame, official Harley-Davidson "vintage orange" drawer fronts and official Harley-Davidson decaling, including the Harley-Davidson bar and shield. They range in price from $80 for a portable storage chest to $1,400 for an 18-drawer heavy-duty combo unit.

Walmart makes super offer to consumers

BENTONVILLE, Ark., and BURBANK, Calif. — Walmart has partnered with Warner Bros. to give its customers exclusive access to see "Man of Steel" in theaters nationwide before the film’s official release.

Tickets for the exclusive screening of "Man of Steel" will go on sale in more than 3,700 Walmart stores starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18. Customers will be able to purchase up to four tickets per visit, and have the option to choose between 2-D or 3-D showings, where applicable. The advance screening will take place in selected local theaters nationwide at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

"We couldn’t be more excited to give our customers and associates early access to one of the summer’s most anticipated movies," said Laura Phillips, SVP of entertainment at Walmart U.S. "Walmart’s premiere of ‘Man of Steel’ once again proves we have the ambition and studio partnerships to develop unique retail programs that give our customers access to the movies they love."

"We are extremely pleased to partner with Walmart on this unprecedented initiative, which will allow devoted fans to be among the first to see ‘Man of Steel.’ We know the movie delivers and believe this unique partnership will kick off strong word of mouth that, thanks to the reach and immediacy of social media, will propel moviegoers to theaters nationwide," added Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution.

Each ticket bought at Walmart will feature a code on the back that allows customers to pre-order their own Blu-ray Combo Pack or HD Digital Download of "Man of Steel," which will contain exclusive film content. Fans will also get the official "Man of Steel Experience" app, which allows them to take photos with Superman, as well as unlock special photo frames by pointing their phone at "Man of Steel" signage in their local Walmart. Customers will also receive a free original digital comic book written by "Man of Steel" screenwriter David Goyer with every ticket. Beginning April 28, a variety of "Man of Steel" merchandise such as T-shirts, electronics, posters and more from top brands will be available at Walmart stores and at Walmart.com.

"Man of Steel" stars Henry Cavill in the roles of Clark Kent and Superman, under the direction of Zack Snyder. The film also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer & Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Entertainment. “Man of Steel” opens nationwide Friday, June 14, in 2-D and 3-D in select theaters and IMAX. It is rated PG-13.
