GameWorks coming to Mall of America’s fourth floor

BY Al Urbanski

The fourth floor of the Mall of America, which has long been a center of night-time activity at the Bloomington, Minnesota, institution, continues to undergo an overhaul.

Owner Triple Five decided to shut down its 14-screen cineplex on the fourth floor following the 2016 holiday season to make way for what it said would be a “first-to-market entertainment venue.” This week the Sky Deck Sports Grill on that level announced it would re-open this later summer as a GameWorks gaming location.

Mall of America will be the seventh location for GameWorks, which offers bowling, laser tag, and arcade games along with American-style cuisine and craft beer and cocktails. Other GameWorks can be found in Las Vegas; Seattle; Denver; Newport, Kentucky; Chesapeake, Virginia; Ontario, California, and Schaumburg, Illinois.

The Mall of America GameWorks will encompass 31,300 sq. ft.

Office supplies giant makes big changes to loyalty program

BY Deena M. Amato-McCoy

Office Depot had one goal when updating its loyalty program: to make sure that every shopper is rewarded.

The office supplies giant debuted its new loyalty program. Besides being free, the “Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Everything” program is designed to save customers money, and deliver expanded benefits. The program evolved following a year-long pilot in several markets, a process that enabled the company to gather customer feedback needed to redesign the program.

The program is now card-free, and integrated within the company's mobile app. Shoppers earn 2% on every purchase they make, and there are no minimum thresholds needed to redeem reward dollars. Members can also use available rewards any time at any Office Depot and OfficeMax stores, or online.

There is also a VIP tier for customers who spend more, such as small businesses. After spending $500 within a year, VIP members will receive free delivery with no minimum purchase and earn 5% back on ink, toner, paper, printing and copying services for 12 months. VIP members also receive exclusive perks such as special promotions, a birthday offer and free product samples or services, according to the company.

All members of the new program will also have access to member-only promotions and personalized offers based on their shopping habits. Additionally, “Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Everything’s” members can earn $2 in rewards by posting online product reviews.

“'Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Everything’ simplifies our loyalty program by offering 2% back in rewards on everything, and we mean everything,” said Lukana Justin, VP of customer marketing for Office Depot. “It’s simple to use and save while providing members with quicker access to rewards.”

Footwear retailer launches in-store pick-up

BY Deena M. Amato-McCoy

Famous Footwear wants to get merchandise into its shoppers’ hands faster.

By rolling out an in-store pickup service chainwide, Famous Footwear’s online shoppers now have the option of picking up their orders in more than 1,000 locations. To encourage shoppers to try the service, the retailer is offering customers that shop between July 7 through July 11, a $5 discount off of one order containing an in-store pickup item.

After adding items to their online shopping cart, customers choose their preferred store and select in-store pickup as their fulfillment option. Once their shoes are ready, shoppers receive an email — typically within two business hours of placing an order, according to Famous Footwear.

“With more than 1,000 stores across the country, customers can now shop even more seamlessly online and in-store,” said Rick Ausick, division president of Famous Footwear.

“Giving our customers the opportunity to pick shoes up the same day is a big plus,” he added. “And with our convenient locations, it makes it very easy. We quickly saw the success of this program in our pilot.”
