Harris Teeter to open new format under 201central banner

BY Marianne Wilson

Charlotte, N.C. — Harris Teeter is currently renovating two locations into a new concept called 201central, which will carry an extensive variety of wine, beer, specialty foods and other general merchandise items. The new format will also feature an array of specialty services, including in-store wine consultants, event coordination and catering as well as party rentals and educational classes focused on wine, beer and food pairings.

The 201central name refers back to one of the original Harris Food Stores, Store #201, on Central Avenue in Charlotte, N.C., which was the first full self-service supermarket in Charlotte, and also the city’s first air-conditioned grocery store and was the first to stay open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights.

The 201central stores will carry over 3,100 varieties of wine and over 680 varieties of beer from around the world, including approximately 35 brands of keg beer and local beers, as well as home brewing and wine making systems and products. They will also have a wide range of specialty foods and expanded international foods including Asian, Middle Eastern, English, Indian, Italian, Kosher, Mexican and South American products.

The stores will average 30,000 sq. ft., and be located in Huntersville, N.C., and Wesley Chapel, N.C.

Walmart blocked from entering New York City

BY Katherine Boccaccio

Bentonville, Ark. — Despite its interest in making a New York City debut in a new Brooklyn neighborhood shopping center, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Friday it was unable to agree to economic terms for a new store. Instead, developer Related Cos. struck a deal with ShopRite to open a new grocery store at the 630,000-sq.-ft. Gateway II shopping center planned for Brooklyn.

According to Steven Restivo, senior director of community affairs for Wal-Mart, however, the retailer is still interested in breaking into New York despite stiff and heated opposition from unions and politicians who have worked hard to block non-union Walmart stores from entering the market.

“We remain committed to bringing new economic development and shopping options to New York City, especially in the neighborhoods that need them most,” said Restivo in a statement. “Two things remain constant: most New Yorkers want us here and we remain interested in providing more convenient access to Walmart for local residents.”

Restivo emphasized that the Gateway II deal dissolved over financial matters and was unrelated to politics.

Restivo said that Walmart will continue to evaluate local opportunities across all five boroughs. New York City has long been a priority for the retailer, which recently made a $4 million donation to a New York City job program.

Walmart expands solar initiative in Arizona

BY Katherine Boccaccio

Bentonville, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday it has launched an expansion of its solar initiative in Arizona at its Buckeye distribution center near Phoenix.

According to the retailer, the distribution center will feature Walmart’s largest solar installation to date with over 14,000 solar panels on a 1 million-sq.-ft. building and parking canopies that will produce up to 30% of the DC’s energy needs.

The solar panels will generate up to 5.3 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy per year.

The Buckeye project is Wal-Mart’s second DC solar project in Arizona, coming approximately a year after a 2-MW project in Casa Grande, Ariz.

"Environmental sustainability is an essential ingredient to us for doing business responsibly and successfully," said David Ozment, senior director of Walmart Energy. "As the world’s largest retailer, our actions have the potential to save our customers money and help substantially reduce our carbon footprint for generations to come."

Wal-Mart has set a goal for being supplied 100% by renewable energy in the coming years.
