Ikea powers up solar in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, N.Y. — One of the largest commercial solar rooftop installations in the five boroughs has gone live. Ikea announced that the solar energy system on its store in Brooklyn, N.Y., now is commissioned, operational and certified by Con Edison and New York City. The 200 kW array occupies 19,000 sq. ft., with four different module types totaling 1,104 panels.
The installation will generate 240,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually for the store, the equivalent of reducing 365,615 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2), eliminating the emissions of 32 cars, or providing electricity for 20 homes yearly.
Ikea Brooklyn store also features 70,000 sq. ft. of green roof, a 6.5-acre waterfront esplanade, multiple transit options, and has been certified as a Brownfield redevelopment. The store has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Other Ikea U.S. sustainable building initiatives include: solar energy systems operational in Burbank, Calif.; Pittsburgh; and Tempe, Ariz., with installation underway on programs at seven locations in California and two other east coast stores: Paramus, N.J.; and Stoughton Mass. Both a solar energy and geothermal system were incorporated into Ikea’s soon-to-open store in Centennial, Col. (See related story).
Target joins GreenChill
Minneapolis — Target Corp. has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) GreenChill program. The program further Target’s efforts to reduce refrigeration emissions by adopting green refrigeration technologies in its stores.
"Target is excited to join the GreenChill partnership and extend our sustainability initiatives to the refrigeration systems in our stores," said Dan Riley, VP property development operations, Target. "We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by forging new partnerships, achieving milestones in our business and progressing towards our sustainability goals. Today’s announcement represents an important step in reducing Target’s refrigeration emissions."
The GreenChill program will help Target achieve its environmental sustainability commitments by offering several benefits, including an industry benchmarking system and greater access to EPA research.
Target works with a variety of organizations to integrate sustainability throughout its business. In addition to GreenChill, Target is committed to earning the Energy Star label for at least 75% of U.S. buildings by 2016 and is part of the EPA’s SmartWay program to reduce transportation-related emissions.
Target is also part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Retail Energy Alliance and a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition that was announced earlier this year.
Office Depot launches Green Business Challenge
Boca Raton, Fla. — Office Depot is launching the 2011 Green Business Challenge in partnership with Local Governments for Sustainability USA (ICLEI) and elected officials from across the United States.
The Green Business Challenge program seeks to engage local property managers and tenants in a friendly competition to save energy, reduce waste and water consumption, procure greener products, and implement other sustainable activities within their companies. It was initially piloted in 2010 as the City of Chicago "Green Office Challenge" and organized by the Chicago Department of Environment and ICLEI USA. Office Depot was the primary underwriter of the challenge in Chicago and directly supported key aspects of the initial program development.
As the Presenting Sponsor of the 2011 Green Business Challenge, Office Depot will provide the core funding for a national rollout of the program, producing “Green Business Challenge Implementation Packs,” which will be given to the cities of Austin, Bellevue and Chula Vista. These packs include direct funding and technical support, as well as products and services designed to help local governments manage the Green Business Challenge. In addition, Office Depot will provide participating cities and businesses with greener purchase training.
