Kentucky Oaks Mall to undergo renovation

Paducah, Ky. — Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Co. announced that its Kentucky Oaks Mall property, located in Paducah, Ky., will under a major renovation.

According to Cafaro, the rehab is the most significant in the mall’s 28-year history, involving both interior and exterior transformations. When complete, the mall will feature newly designed entrances, concourse skylights, new ceiling treatments, energy-efficient lighting, as well as new flooring treatments and soft-seating areas.

An upgraded HVAC system will be installed and parking areas will feature modernized lighting systems and signage.

Construction launches March 1 and is slated for completion in November.

The million+-sq.-ft. Kentucky Oaks Mall is anchored by Elder-Beerman, Dillard’s, J.C. Penney, Sears and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Five Below to open 50 stores and enter Chicago market in 2011

Philadelphia — Five Below will open 50 stores in 2011, including its first-ever locations in the Chicago market.

The extreme-value teen retailer said it has signed 12 store leases in the Chicago area. The new stores, scheduled to open in spring, are the first of up to 20 locations that Five Below plans to open in the Chicago market this year. Over the next three to five years, the chain anticipates expanding its foothold in Chicagoland to as many as 60 locations.

"Chicago is the gateway to the Midwest as Five Below continues its expansion," says Tom Vellios, CEO and co-founder of Five Below. "As one of the largest markets in the nation, it holds huge potential for us.”

With the addition of the Chicago stores, Five Below will operate in 15 states from New Hampshire to North Carolina along the East Coast and now in the Midwest.

In October 2010, Five Below, which offers a wide range of merchandise for teens and pre-teens priced at $5 or lower, received an investment from global private equity firm Advent International to help advance the retailer’s growth strategy.

Need an app? There’s a Mac Store for that

CUPERTINO, California – Apple Thursday introduced its Mac App Store, which it claims boasts more than 1,000 free and paid apps. According to the company, the Mac App Store brings the App Store experience to the Mac, enabling users to buy apps using their iTunes account, download and install them in just one step.

“With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps.”

According to Apple, more than one million apps were downloaded since the Mac Store launched.
