Kroger stepping up in fight against organized retail theft

BY CSA STAFF

New York City — Kroger Co. is increasing its efforts to stop organized retail theft rings, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

The supermarket company now has an executive in charge of organized crime investigations. He oversees investigators in each of Kroger’s 17 divisions across the nation.

Last October, the Kroger team worked with federal immigration agents in Seattle to apprehend 32 people suspected of stealing $4.87 million worth of goods from six retailers over 16 months, the report said. Authorities say the ring shipped vehicles full of stolen goods overseas to be sold in Cambodia. Kroger lost $1.21 million.

Acting CEO takes helm at Sunflower Farmers Market

BY CSA STAFF

Boulder, Col. — Sunflower Farmers Market appointed Chris S. Sherrell as its CEO, the natural grocery chain announced Friday. He has worked with Sunflower since its inception in 2002 and most recently served as the company’s president and COO.

Sherrell has served as the acting CEO since the middle of February, shortly after Michael Gilliland, the company’s founder and then-CEO, was arrested in Phoenix following a prostitution sting operated by undercover Phoenix Police Department officers.

Gilliland subsequently was indicted on accusations he knowingly offered to pay for sex with "Marissa" — the alias of an undercover female Phoenix police officer — whom he believed to be 17 years old, according to court documents.

A jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 9 for Gilliland, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Sunflower has 33 stores in six states- Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Utah. It plans to enter California later this month and Oklahoma this fall.

It feels great to have a case solved under you. Hope I can handle a case soon as I become a police officer officially this month. I’ve been following different cases and learn from it as well for me to get ready for my position.

BY CSA STAFF

New York City — The unemployment rate in April edged up to 9.0%, compared with 8.8% in March 2011.

Construction employment was about unchanged in April, according to Friday’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This industry has shown little net movement since early 2010, after having fallen sharply during the prior three years.

Overall, the economy added 244,000 jobs in April, a higher gain than anticipated by analysts.

The latest employment situation shows 13.7 million unemployed persons in the United States, about the same as last month’s measure. The number of persons unemployed for less than five weeks increased by 242,000 in April. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) declined by 283,000 to 5.8 million; their share of unemployment declined to 43.4%.
