Macy’s holiday hiring edges up from last year
Cincinnati — Macy’s Inc. said it plans to hire approximately 80,000 seasonal associates for its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers and online fulfillment centers nationwide for the 2012 holiday season. This is an increase of about 2.5% from last year.
"Macy’s traditionally implements one of the most robust holiday hiring programs in American retailing, and that will be the case again in 2012,” said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s Inc. chairman, president and CEO. "Moreover, our seasonal positions help a wide range of Americans earn extra money. In many cases, these are students working to help pay tuition, retirees seeking to remain active and individuals wanting to supplement their income."
Ikea to open store in Merriam, Kansas
Conshohocken, Pa. — Ikea announced it is submitting plans to the city of Merriam, Kansas, for a Kansas City-area store that would increase the Swedish retailer’s presence in the Midwestern United States.
Located eight miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri, the 349,000-sq.-.ft, proposed Ikea store would be built along the eastern side of Interstate-35 at the Johnson Drive exit on 18 acres to be purchased from DDR Corp. Ikea also will evaluate potential on-site power generation to complement its current U.S. renewable energy presence at 89% of its U.S. locations.
Saks opens in Kazakhstan
New York — Saks Inc. has opened its first Saks Fifth Avenue store in Kazakhstan, in the city of Almaty.
The three-level, approximate 91,000 sq. ft. store is located in the Esentai Shopping Mall, which is the first of its kind in Kazakhstan. In addition to being anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, the Esentai Shopping Mall includes a large selection of branded luxury fashion and jewelry stores. The shopping mall is part of Esentai Park, a new mixed-use development which includes luxury residential and commercial towers as well as a five-star hotel, which is expected to open in 2013.
