In a first-of-its-kind professional sports league shop-in-shop concept in a major retail chain, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the National Hockey League launched three NHL branded shops in Dick’s locations in Lombard, Ill., Cranberry Township, Pa., and West Nyack, N.Y.

The 400-sq.-ft. shops stock a variety of men’s, women’s and children’s lifestyle apparel, jerseys, headwear, outerwear and accessories featuring top NHL-licensed brands. The assortment includes authentic and lifestyle home team merchandise to cater to a wide range of fans.

Drawing inspiration from the NHL Powered by Reebok flagship in New York City, the shops are designed as an immersive experience. They are anchored by a four-ft., hanging 3D NHL shield, an LED-illuminated perforated metal back wall and curved overhead graphics featuring 30 team logos and a home team call-out. Larger-than-life game action imagery and custom-designed racks, including a jersey locker unit, add to the experience.

Design: Big Red Rooster, Columbus, Ohio (in partnership with the NHL and Dick’s)

Walmart gears up for last 12 shopping days before Christmas

BY CSA STAFF

Walmart declared an early Black Friday victory and reported record Cyber Monday sales, but the big box retailer is not done yet. Starting at 8 a.m. Friday, it is launching its Christmas Countdown Savings Event and dropping prices on popular toys, electronics, apparel and table games.

With only 12 days to shop before Christmas, the strategy aims to drive last-minute shoppers to both its stores and e-commerce site.

In addition, at 8 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, Walmart’s largest shipment of the PlayStation 4 will arrive at stores across the country. Walmart.com will also have a limited quantity of PlayStation 4 inventory available while supplies last.

“When we reported our record-breaking Black Friday results, we said we weren’t done yet, and we meant it,” said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising and marketing officer, Walmart U.S. “As our customers count down the final days until Christmas, we remain focused on offering them great prices and the hottest gifts to place under their Christmas trees.”

According to ShopperTrak’s predictions, four of the 10 busiest shopping days will occur between Dec. 20 and Dec. 24, with Super Saturday (Dec. 21) being the second most-popular shopping day after Black Friday.

The retailer will also launch a special savings event on Walmart.com Monday, Dec. 16, featuring more than 300 items across electronics, toys, apparel and home goods. Walmart.com offers free shipping for orders greater than $35 and the last day to place an order for free shipping and have the gifts arrive by Christmas is Thursday, Dec. 19.

Walmart is also reminding customers about its Christmas ad match, which enable shoppers to match competitors’ prices before or after a purchase. With Christmas ad match, which covers electronics, toys and grocery products, customers who find a lower price on an item already purchased through Dec. 24 can take the receipt and the competitor ad to a customer service desk at any Walmart store. The store will match the price and give the customer the difference on a gift card.

Report: Home Depot to spend $300 million on tech, new DCs, same-day shipping

BY Dan Berthiaume

Atlanta – The Home Depot reportedly plans to invest $300 million on technology and supply chain upgrades during its fiscal year 2014, which begins in February 2014. According to the Wall Street Journal, the results will include three new fulfillment centers in California, Atlanta, and Ohio by 2016, as well as same-day shipping for some online orders.

The new centers will dramatically increase the number of orders the chain can ship the same day they are received, which significantly expands the number of orders it will be able to deliver within two days or less. With this same day shipping capability, these centers are geographically positioned to leverage parcel freight carriers’ networks to deliver 90% of customers’ parcel orders within two days, using economical ground service. For example, when the network is complete, most customers will be able to order on a Wednesday by 5 p.m. with the product delivered by Friday, according to Home Depot.

Home Depot’s total sales are expected to reach $79 billion during fiscal 2013, aided by a boost is online sales. Other new programs for the upcoming fiscal year may include expanded in-home assembly and installation services.
