Office Depot names former Toys ‘R’ Us exec as executive VP of retail
Boca Raton, Fla. — Office Depot has appointed Troy Rice as executive VP of retail, effective April 14. Rice, who replaces Juan Guerrero, will also serve as a member of Office Depot’s leadership team and report directly to chairman and CEO Roland Smith.
Rice most recently served for eight years as executive VP-stores and services at Toys “R” Us, during which he was responsible for all aspects of store operations for Toys "R” Us and Babies “R” Us, as well as operations for FAO Schwarz and seasonal stores. Previously, he spent 16 years in positions of increasing responsibility at The Home Depot, culminating in the role of division president, Northern Division.
“Troy is an accomplished executive who has focused his career on improving operational performance and the customer experience in multi-unit retail stores,” said Office Depot CEO Smith. “His 20 plus years of experience in retail operations and his omni-channel orientation will enable him to make immediate and significant contributions to a number of Office Depot’s 2014 critical priorities.”
Office Depot names another new leader
Veteran retail operations executive Troy Rice has joined Office Depot as EVP of retail as the company continues to build out its senior leadership team in the wake of its merger with OfficeMax.
Rice spent the past eight years with Toys “R” Us, most recently serving as EVP fo stores and services. Prior that he spent 16 years with The Home Depot and served as president of the retailer’s $24 billion northern division at the time of his departure.

The hiring of Rice follows the appointment last week of Juliet Johansson to the role of EVP and chief strategy officer at Office Depot. Unlike Rice, Johansson brings to the company a different type of retail background with experience at The Blackstone Group, Ryder Systems and McKinsey & Company.
Johansson has already joined the company and Rice will assume his new responsibilities on April 14.

Home Depot appeals to power hungry with spring promo
Home Depot’s fifth annual Spring Black Friday promotional event is underway and one of the “Wow,” items being featured is an outdoor producttool system featuring the industry most powerful rechargeable battery.
Home Depot said it has an exclusive partnership with the EGO brand to offer a line of outdoor equipment powered by a 56-volt lithium-ion battery that is said to be the industry most powerful. In addition to offer four EGO brand products (a lawn mower, blower, hedge trimmer and string trimmer) powered by the interchangeable battery, the retailer said it expanding its long-time exclusive relationship with Ryobi to offer the Ryobi ONE+ product line with more than 50 tool that are compatible with one battery.
"This spring and every season, The Home Depot aims to bring the latest tools to market to make the to-do list easier and simpler," said Dana Hudson one of the retailer’s senior merchants. "Our continued partnership with Ryobi and our new partnership with EGO are great examples of bringing the best and latest technology to our customers."
The EGO and Ryobi products both operate with lithium-ion batteries that are lighter, run longer and can be recharged more quickly that earlier cordless tools which ran on nickel cadmium, or NiCad, battery systems.
