PetSmart announces management succession; new CEO to take reins in June

Phoenix — PetSmart on Tuesday announced its planned management succession plan. The company said that following its annual shareholders meeting on June 14, 2013, current president and COO David K. Lenhardt will be promoted to CEO and simultaneously join the board of directors. At that time, current chairman and CEO Bob Moran will vacate the CEO’s chair and become executive chairman.

Lenhardt joined PetSmart in 2000 as SVP services, strategic planning, and business development, and went on to hold several other executive positions. In January 2011, he was promoted to EVP merchandising, marketing, supply chain and strategic planning.

“During the last several years, we have focused on and invested in strategic succession planning, and as a result, we’ve assembled what I believe is one of the best leadership teams in retail,” said Moran. “Looking ahead, this planned management succession will allow us to remain focused on executing the strategies that have been key to our success over the past several years. David is the perfect leader with the experience, vision and ability to continue to lead PetSmart through the current economic challenges and toward a strong and sustainable future.”

Lowe’s to increase hiring with housing market rebound

Mooresville, N.C. — Lowe’s announced that it plans to hire 45,000 seasonal workers at its U.S. stores, 13% more than a year earlier, and add 9,000 permanent part-time employees as the housing rebound spurs remodeling.

The permanent part-time positions include store associates focused on direct interaction and expertise for customers. Employees in the permanent positions will be scheduled to work during peak weekday shopping times.

“We are focused on providing customers with outstanding service,” said Scott Purvis, VP human resources, operations. “We are looking for candidates who are experienced in any of the home improvement trades, and, most importantly, those who are committed to providing Lowe’s customers an exceptional service experience.”

Seasonal jobs available are focused on customer support and include cashiers, lawn and garden specialists, loaders, and stockers. The number of hours worked per week will vary based on the needs of individual stores, but, on average, seasonal employees could work an estimated 20-25 hours per week.

Sales of existing homes are expected to rise about 7.2% to 4.98 million this year, the highest since 2007, according to the median estimate of economists and housing analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Walgreens enters into partnership with SCIO Health Analytics

Hartford, Conn. — SCIO Health Analytics, a health analytics services company, has entered into a relationship with Walgreens to help employers gain maximum return on investment through worksite health centers and wellness programs, identifying opportunities to improve workforce health while also reducing costs.

SCIO Health Analytics provides outcomes data and other measurement tools to worksite health centers managed by Walgreens Employer Solutions Group as part of the pilot program. Walgreens employer-based health centers offer a broad spectrum of services, including primary care, pharmacy, occupational health, fitness, nutrition, chronic condition management, physical therapy, infusion services, dental, vision and more.

While all services and worksite locations are tailored to meet the specific needs of each employer, the integration of advanced analytics tools will help Walgreens and its clients further develop custom strategies for health and wellness services, while also aiming to improve financial performance and increase productivity and employee satisfaction.

“Data and analytics are important tools that help demonstrate the value of our employer-based health and wellness offerings, from improved patient outcomes and overall savings, to also identifying needs for new or diversified services,” said Trent Riley, divisional VP for Walgreens Health and Wellness division. “Walgreens is committed to exploring new and innovative ways to integrate the latest technology to deliver valuable insights to our clients, while their employees get, stay and live well.”
