Playing Reindeer Games at GGP

BY Michael Fickes

General Growth Properties has created an interactive sweepstakes series called Reindeer Games to promote shopping centers across its portfolio throughout the holiday shopping season.

Starring in Reindeer Games is every kid’s favorite reindeer Rudolph, “with his nose so bright.” Rudolph will lead Santa’s eight other reindeer through a series of nine three-day sweepstakes running from Nov. 28 through Dec. 24. By the end of the promotion, the series will have given away more than $25,000 in prizes.

Shoppers can enter each of the nine sweepstakes by visiting their local GGP mall’s website, Facebook page and mobile site.

Briefly, here’s how it will work: On Nov. 28, an illustration of Dasher and a photo of a Bose VideoWave III Entertainment System will appear on mall websites and Facebook pages, unveiling the first prize in the series. A third party will conduct the drawing on Nov. 30, and the winner will be notified that day.

On Dec. 1, Dancer will unveil the second prize: a Family Package of Mongoose Bike and Helmets. The drawing will occur on Dec. 3, and the winner will receive notification immediately.

Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen will follow along in like fashion, with Rudolph finishing up the series with the final sweepstakes.

The dates and prizes of each sweepstakes are as follows:

Nov. 28 – 30 Dasher Bose VideoWave III Entertainment System
Dec. 1 – 3 Dancer Family Package of Mongoose Bike and Helmets
Dec. 4 – 6 Prancer Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR Camera with Accessory Kit
Dec. 7 – 9 Vixen 2 Microsoft XBOX One’s
Dec. 10 – 12 Comet 4 Spa Finder Cards Valued at $500 Each
Dec. 13 – 15 Cupid 2 Vacations to Hotel Riu Cancun Courtesy of Apple Vacations
Dec. 16 – 18 Donner $2,500 Shop Etc. Gift Cards
Dec. 19 – 21 Blitzen Tanque Verde Ranch Experience
Dec. 22 – 24 Rudolph Apple iPad

The goal is to build awareness of GGP properties and to drive traffic to the mall websites, which will put up special offers for visitors on their way to the sweepstakes pages.

Nearly all 122 GGP properties will participate in the sweepstakes series.

DSW advances footprint as Q3 sales slow

BY CSA STAFF

Undeterred by volatility in its sales results, leading footwear retailer DSW maintained its pace of expansion and opened 16 new stores to end the third quarter with 393 locations.

The operator of large format footwear stores that average about 22,000-sq.-ft., said its third quarter sales declined 0.7% while total sales increased 6.8% to $633 million due to the addition of the new stores. The third quarter comp decline is the latest development in what has been a tumultuous year from a sales standpoint.

The company began 2013 slowly and offered modest guidance around same store sales and earnings and then reported a first quarter comp decrease of 2.4%. Weather trends and business conditions improved in the second quarter and same store sales popped 4.4%. The company raised its full year profit forecast and declared a two-for-one stock split. After reporting third quarter results that saw profits increase 14% to 58 cents a share, or $1.17 on a pre-split basis, the company affirmed its full year profit forecast of $1.80 to $1.90 on a post split basis.

"A solid increase in total sales combined with disciplined execution and inventory management allowed us to increase our adjusted earnings per share by 14%. We achieved our highest level of profitability in the third quarter while navigating through a promotional environment,” said Mike MacDonald, president and CEO. “We were encouraged by the improvement in traffic and sales at the end of the quarter, as the fall selling season got off to a delayed start."

Two of the 16 stores the company opened during the quarter were in the company’s smaller format, according to MacDonald who noted that DSW advanced its omni-channel work and implemented a number of systems initiatives during the third quarter.
