Price Chopper names VP technical services

Schenectady, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets/Golub Corp. announced that Sam Wagar has been promoted to the position of VP technical services, reporting directly to R. Gregory Zeh, Jr., VP Information Systems, CIO.

In his new position, Sam will be responsible for assessing, maintaining and recommending technology products and services to support the delivery of enterprise-wide technical services. He will oversee the corporate help desk, technical maintenance, technical operations, technical services and information integration.

In addition Sam will lead the development and implementation of technology architecture standards and roadmaps for the 130-store chain.

Sam joined Price Chopper in 2008 most recently holding the position of Director of Enterprise Architecture.

The Golub Corp. owns and operates 130 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

NAHB builds hope for construction industry

The National Association of Home Builders sees the residential construction industry gaining momentum in a larger economy that includes a few wild cards.

At the International Builders’ Show here in Las Vegas, the Washington, D.C.-based trade association updated its 2013 housing starts forecast to 949,000 starts in 2013, up 21.5% from the prior year. At the end of January, the group had forecast 932,000.

Single-family starts are anticipated to rise 22% from 535,000 last year to 650,000 in 2013, according to NAHB chief economist David Crowe. They are expected to jump an additional 30% in 2014 to 844,000 units.

On the multi-family side, NAHB is anticipating that starts will increase 22% from 246,000 units last year to 299,000 in 2013, and rise an additional 6% to 317,000 units in 2014.

“Nearly every measure of housing market strength — sales, starts, prices, permits and builder confidence — has been trending upward in recent months, and we expect to see gradual but steady growth along these lines in 2013,” Crowe said.

Among the possible challenges to an increasingly strong recovery are tight mortgage lending conditions, inaccurate appraisals, rising prices of materials and declining inventory of buildable lots, Crowe said.

Pilgrim Furniture City expands partnership with TD Retail Card Services

Mahwah, N.J. — Connecticut retailer Pilgrim Furniture City has expanded its relationship with TD Retail Card Services, moving from the company’s Renovate Card program to a branded private label card created specifically for Pilgrim customers.

Under the agreement, the Mahwah, N.J-based business unit of TD Bank, N.A., will direct all facets of the branded program for Pilgrim, which has locations in Southington, Manchester, Danbury and Milford (all in Connecticut). The new Pilgrim Furniture City credit card will offer consumers a full menu of deferred interest and equal pay programs.

In 2011, Pilgrim expanded its payment options by joining TD Retail Card Services’ Renovate program, a revolving charge card for independent home furnishings retailers that provides many of the important advantages of a private label card to companies with single or multiple locations. Renovate cardholders will still be able to use their card in Pilgrim’s stores, but will be offered the opportunity to apply for the branded program. The company signed up for Renovate and, now, the branded card through its membership in Furniture First, a home furnishings and mattress purchasing cooperative that named TD Retail Card Services a preferred provider for its members in 2011. The group today includes 182 retail furniture dealers operating 395 locations nationwide.

“Based on the excellent customer service with the Renovate program, it was only natural to upgrade to the branded card,” said Michael Albert, president of Pilgrim Furniture City.
