Red Wing in retail push

BY CSA STAFF

New York City — Red Wing Shoe Co. plans to open 125 stores in the next five years, according to the Star Tribune.

The stores, all independently owned, will open mostly in the Northeast, in cities such as Philadelphia, where the Minnesota retailer doesn’t have a strong presence.

Red Wing has about 425 U.S. stores, and about 70% are independently owned and operated.

The push into new markets represents about a 20% jump in new store growth, the company said.

"We’ve recognized the stores are an integral part of our brand and our customer likes shopping there," spokesman Peter Engel said in the report. "These are guys who like to pull up in their truck and dirty work clothes — and not trip over a stroller and shopping cart. They want to sit down, leave their dirty boots behind and walk out of the store with the right footwear for their job."

Whole Foods emphasizes healthy eating

BY CSA STAFF

New York City — Whole Foods Market is starting to roll out a new range of healthier prepared foods, nutritional scorecards and other changes as part of its return to its healthy eating roots, the Associated Press reported.

The changes are part of the company’s "Health Starts Here” program. Among the changes Whole Foods is rolling out this year:

  • Adding healthier prepared foods and baked goods in stores nationwide that meet new criteria such as sprouted grain bread with no refined flour, added oil, refined sugar or processed ingredients.
  • Posting nutritional scorecards around markets to help shoppers choose foods with the most nutrients per calorie.
  • Employing a specialist in healthy eating at each store to provide tips, tours and demonstrations for customers.
  • Increasing services such as wellness clubs and nutrition education.

Whole Foods is testing wellness clubs at five sites where customers can pay a fee for education, a dining club and discounts on foods that meet the "Health Starts Here" criteria, the Associated Press said.
