Regional grocer offers the latest in mobile self-scanning technology

Shoppers can skip the line and checkout on their phones at a new supermarket in San Luis Obispo

At California Fresh Market, shoppers can download an app that lets them scan items' barcodes to add to their purchase. Shoppers can keep track of their running total while they browse and see specials and other information.

When it's time to checkout, shoppers scan a QR code at the front of the store. Payment happens on the phone via credit card or ApplePay and they're good to go.

The technology is provided by mobile developer FutureProof Retail.

California Fresh Market operates three stores in California stores, with locations in Solvang, San Luis Obispo, and Pismo (El Rancho Market).

Report: Election will impact online commerce

According to a report by Business Intelligence, if Trump maintains his stance to protect American workers from being displaced by machines, it could become more difficult for online retailers to boost their productivity if they are forced to invest in traditional forms of labor over new ones.

More big retailers announce Thanksgiving/Black Friday plans

Three of the nation’s largest retail chains remain committed to opening their doors on Thanksgiving.

Target Corp. announced it will open its stores at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and Best Buy said it plans to open at 5 p.m. Walmart will start its Black Friday event at 6 p.m. on Turkey Day (most Walmart locations are open 24 hours).

Target’s Black Friday deals will be available online with free shipping all day Thanksgiving, and in all Target stores at 6 p.m. that evening. It’s also offering a Black Friday presale on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, with doorbuster deals early at all stores via Cartwheel and at Target.com.

Walmart will offer its Black Friday deals online beginning at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thanksgiving morning, and in stores later that day, starting at 6 p.m. To meet anticipated demand, Walmart said it has secured substantial availability of the merchandise in its Black Friday deals. For example, it has stocked its digital and physical aisles with more than 1.5 million televisions, nearly two million tablets and computers and three million video games. New this year, the chain its app users select Black Friday deals starting Nov. 10.

Best Buy’s Black Friday deals will be available online from Nov. 24 through Nov. 26, and at its stores on Thanksgiving. The retailer is opening its doors at 5 p.m. On Turkey Day, and keeping them open until 1 a.m.
