Report: Amazon, Costco tops in online customer satisfaction

New York — Amazon and Costco lead the pack lead the pack when it comes to the e-tailers that have most satisfied their customers, according to the "2012 Harris Poll Shopper Satisfaction Study of Online Retailers." The survey used a 100-point scale to measure customer satisfaction with the e-commerce sites of 14 big retailers. Amazon.com ranked first with a score of 82.

Costco Wholesale Corp. took the overall No. 2 spot with 77 points. Under the subcategory of clothing and apparel, L.L. Bean and Victoria’s Secret led the way with 73 points each; J.C. Penney and Kohl’s topped the department store category with 70 points apiece.

Harris conducted the poll online from Oct. 25 to Nov. 13 using the Google Consumer Surveys tool. The study evaluated 14 e-retailers and asked consumers to rate e-retailers for the ease of shopping their sites, price, selection and their likelihood to recommend the site to others. Amazon.com took the top spot in all categories, including price, earning a 5.7 on a 7-point scale. The next highest ranking on price was a 5.2 for Costco.

Target ranked third overall with a score of 75; Zappos was sixth with 72 points. Abercrombie & Fitch and Urban Outfitters tied for last with 60 points.

Clarks Cos. names team to lead retail expansion

Newton Upper Falls, Mass. — Shoe manufacturer and retailer Clarks Cos. announced it has put a new real estate team in place to help reach its aggressive expansion goals.

According to Somerset, England-based parent C&J Clark, its retail division has opened nearly 300 company-owned, full price and outlet stores in the U.S. over the last 18 years and plans to add 30 to 50 new stores per year, with a goal of doubling its footprint over the next five years.

Bob Miller, Senior VP retail, said Brianna Kling has been promoted to director of the Northeast Region, and Jim Balducci has joined Clarks as regional director of the Western Region.

Criss Nigro, VP real estate, will lead the new team’s growth throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

The company’s Canadian division has also announced that Kathy Linkletter has joined the organization as it embarks on its own development of a retail chain. Clarks Canada has developed a robust wholesale business and recently opened several franchised units in Quebec and Ontario, and plans to open corporate stores are in the works, according to the company.

Full-price Clarks shoe stores in the U.S. are 2,500 sq. ft. and outlets are 3,000 sq. ft.

Mood meter tracks shopping sentiments

New York — Shopper sentiment tracker NetBase said that, since Black Friday, it has been tracking the changes in shopper moods for 10 retailers with its Holiday Shopping Mood Meter.

The company found that Kohl’s was No. 1 more often than Amazon, Walmart was the only brand with a net negative sentiment, and Old Navy broke the Top 5 only once.

Between Nov. 19 and Nov. 27, the Holiday Shopping Mood Meter analyzed the web’s big data for mentions of Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s, Amazon, Old Navy, The Home Depot, Sears, Toys “R” Us, and Kohl’s, then ranked the 10 brands based on sentiment.

Following are the daily winners based on most positive shopper sentiments:

11/19-11/20: Kohl’s
11/21: Amazon
11/22 (Thanksgiving): Macy’s
11/23 (Black Friday): Home Depot and Macy’s
11/24: Kohl’s, Amazon and Best Buy made up the Top 3
11/25: Target
11/26 (Cyber Monday): Amazon, followed by Kohl’s and Best Buy
11/27: Kohl’s
