Report: Apple to allow shoppers to finalize own in-store purchases

BY Marianne Wilson

New York City — Apple will spend $900 million on its stores in fiscal 2012, up from $614 million this year, according to Tech Observer, which cited a new research note from UBS analyst Maynard Um.

The report also said that that Apple plans to give shoppers the ability to complete their own in-store purchases via its iOS application for the iPhone. The new application will apply only to accessories and on-the-shelf items, and not more costly item like the iPhone, iPad, or Macs.

Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, said on the company’s most recent earnings call that will open 40 stores in 2012, with 75% of the openings outside the United States.

Weatherproof store to have ‘leave your Blackberry at the door’ policy

BY Marianne Wilson

New York City — Apparel manufacturer Weatherproof will open its first Apartment 32 store on Nov. 10, in the SoHo section of Manhattan. The flagship location, which will carry women’s and men’s apparel, will have an unusual “leave your Blackberry at the door” policy.

“We’re providing a great venue for people to visit, put their feet up, and enjoy face-to-face conversation,” says Freddie Stollmack, president of Weatherproof. “People can actually get to know each other without the help of an electronic device!”

The new store will be outfitted as a chic Manhattan apartment, one that invites shoppers to enjoy the comforts of a modern home. The store’s sales associates are referred to as “residents” and shoppers as “house guests” or “visitors.” Although there is a no-talking on smartphones rule, guests can charge their phones, free of phone, while relaxing on a couch and sipping a cup of espresso and chatting with other shoppers.

In addition, the store will host “date night” every Thursday night. While enjoying extended store hours, cocktails will be served to “apartment guests;” shopping will be put on the “back burner.”

Apartment 32 will carry men’s and women’s apparel geared towards a younger demographic. The collections feature water resistant, cold resistant and wind resistant jackets. It will also house the entire 32 Heat collection — different categories in active outerwear combined with a new process that retains and absorbs body heat.

Ikea ups solar presence to more than 50% of U.S. stores

BY Katherine Boccaccio

Conshohocken, Pa. — Ikea announced on Wednesday plans to install solar energy panels at three additional U.S. locations, bringing the number of Ikea U.S. stores with a solar program to 23 – more than half of the home-furnishing retailer’s domestic presence.

The newest stores to come on line with solar are in Draper, Utah; New Haven, Conn.; and Portland, Ore. Pending governmental permits, rooftop installation of the nearly 10,000 total panels will begin next year, with completion slated for spring 2012, and will generate 3,156 MWh of electricity yearly.

Ikea will own and operate each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings – as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement.

The Draper store’s program will encompass 4,311 panels generating 1,487,080 kWh/year; New Haven will feature 3,920 panels generating 1,099,800 kWh/year, and Portland’s program will encompass 2,072 panels generating 568,900 kWh/year.

“This initiative, part of the company’s never-ending list of sustainable activities, will lower the carbon intensity of the electric grid and the U.S. carbon footprint of Ikea,” said Mike Ward, Ikea U.S. president.

For the Draper and Portland projects, Ikea contracted with REC Solar; Gehrlicher Solar USA, part of Gehrlicher AG, was awarded the contract for Ikea New Haven.
