Report: Disney shops to open in J.C. Penney

New York — Disney has joined the roster of brands that will be setting up shop in J.C. Penney Co., with Disney children’s boutiques opening in Penney stores next fall, Women’s Wear Daily reported.

The in-store boutiques will feature products designed and sourced by Disney Consumer Products exclusively for J.C. Penney’s as well as Disney stores and theme parts, according to the report.

Women’s Wear Daily got a jump on the story and reported this morning that at least 520 J.C. Penney stores will be getting the shops in time for next year’s back-to-school season.

While J.C. Penney and other major retailers including Wal-Mart, Macy’s and Kohl’s sell Disney licensed products, the goods stocked in J.C. Penney’s Disney shops will be made by Disney Consumer Products exclusively for Penney and its own Disney stores and theme parks.

J.C. Penney chief merchant Liz Sweney told fashion industry publication WWD that the shops “will command prominent space.”

The Disney shops will average 750 sq. ft. to 1,100 sq. ft. and sell costumes, plush toys, figurines, footwear, sleepwear, underwear, backpacks, lunch totes and apparel for boys, girls and babies, the report said.

What took them so long? Disney has a very good distribution network around the world, I don't think it's that difficult for them to spread even further, it's only a matter of logistics. I hope they'll bring along the brand name sunglasses, my daughter keeps asking me about she could get them.

TRU fires latest shot in holiday toy battle

WAYNE, N.J. — Toys"R"Us revealed its 2012 hot toys list Wednesday, but not before Walmart did the same, giving the discounter a head start and the opportunity to poke fun at the toy retailer’s earlier announced toy reservation program.

The Toys"R"Us list includes 36 toys available in stores and online at Toysrus.com/HotToys. As earlier announced, customers can reserve any of the 36 toys named to the list, as well as 14 additional Holiday Hot Toy List "contenders," now through Oct. 31.

"At Toys"R"Us, we live and breathe toys 365 days a year, and we’ve spent the past 12 months scouring the world for the most amazing new toy introductions to offer our customers this Christmas," said Lisa Harnisch, SVP, general merchandising manager, Toys"R"Us, U.S. "Putting together this official guide to holiday toy shopping is never easy, but our track record for identifying the hottest toys of the season year after year is well established. That’s why we’re excited also to introduce our first-ever Hot Toy Reservation program, providing gift givers the ability to obtain any of the 50 toys we – as THE toy authority – believe will be among the most sought-after playthings of the season."

Walmart got a jump on Toys"R"Us by unveiling its top toy list on Friday morning. In doing so it took the opportunity to take a shot at Toys"R"Us and its toy reservation program.

Walmart said its layaway program and top toy offering gives parents the confidence to shop now for the toys kids want at every day low prices. And in an obvious dig at Toys"R"Us, the press release for Walmart’s top 20 toys declared, "no reservations required: America’s largest toy seller’s hassle-free layaway program begins this Sunday."

Walmart’s announcement followed a Toy’s "R" Us event held at the retailer’s New York City flagship stores where CEO Gerry Storch sought to position his company as the holiday toy authority and unveiled a new "hot toy" reservation program. Toys "R" Us includes 50 items on what it called its much-anticipated hot toy list that serves as the official guide to Christmas toy buying. The company also said it would begin a new service to ship orders placed online to stores, something Walmart has been doing for years.

Walmart launches healthy foods rewards program

Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart and HumanaVitality announced a first-of-its-kind program called Vitality HealthyFood, whereby Walmart offers a 5% discount on produce items to HumanaVitality members. The discount is loaded on a card in the form of a credit within five business days that can be redeemed on a subsequent trip to Walmart.

“Price is an important factor in incentivizing wellness in America. By offering affordable, healthier foods, we will help make our customers healthier and reduce costs to our healthcare system as a whole," said John Agwunobi, president of health and wellness at Walmart U.S.

The program is set to begin Oct. 15 when the 5% discount becomes available on produce items bearing the recently developed “Great for You” icon, The discounter expects to apply the icon to select private-label products under the Great Value and Marketside brands that meet the “Great for You” criteria. The program is likely to be expanded to branded food items in 2013.

Walmart’s products eligible for the credit include fresh fruits, vegetables, lean cuts of meat, skim milk, brown rice and packaged goods, the company said.
