Report: Online Retailers Opening Stores May See Sales Drop

BY CSA STAFF

Cambridge, Mass. Online retailers who open a bricks-and-mortar location during the holiday shopping season could see more than a 15% decrease in online sales, according to research by professors at MIT Sloan School of Management.

The opening of stores triggers the requirement to charge sales tax, which affects online sales as customers start to research alternative options to avoid the tax, the professors found in a white paper titled, “How does an Obligation to Collect Sales Tax Affect Consumer and Firm Behavior?”

The report also found that U.S. state sales-tax laws have a significant impact on both customer and retailer behavior, providing a disincentive for retailers to establish a physical presence in high-tax states as well as a disincentive for customers to make online purchases when sales tax is charged.

Retail sites are required to charge state sales tax once they establish a presence in a state, such as a retail store, warehouse or office.

Dollar General installs blind-friendly POS equipment

BY CSA STAFF

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. Dollar General announced that it has begun installing new point of sale equipment that will protect the privacy of Dollar General shoppers with visual impairments.

The new devices have tactile keys arranged like a standard telephone keypad. They will allow Dollar General shoppers who have difficulty reading information on a touch screen to privately and independently enter their PIN and other confidential information.

Dollar General has installed the first tactile devices at several stores in Texas. The new equipment will be installed in all of Dollar General’s 8,300 stores in the United States in less than eighteen months.

Lela Behee, a blind Dollar General shopper from Texas, was excited about the company’s announcement: “I really enjoy shopping at Dollar General, and now feel confident that I can enter my PIN myself, even though I cannot see the touch screen. I wish more retailers would follow Dollar General’s example.”
