Retail Orphan Initiative’s annual pre-NRF event to focus on mobile, social media and other top trends

BY Marianne Wilson

Nashville – Retail’s top industry analysts will join forces with C-level retail executives and technology vendors at the Retail Orphan Initiative’s SuperSaturday event in New York on Jan. 12, one day before the opening of the National Retail Federation’s annual convention. Admission to retailers is free, and all proceeds from the vendor sponsorships go to help the Retail Orphan Initiative, Retailroi.org. Retailers can register for SuperSaturday here.

The fast-paced SuperSaturday event, which will be held at the PwC auditorium, is designed to provide attendees with an in-depth look at the latest data and trends in the retail industry before they hit the show floor at NRF. The 2013 edition of SuperSaturday will focus heavily on topics such as mobile, social media, and the convergence of marketing and technology in retail and consumer goods.

"In just a few years, SuperSaturday has become one of the ‘must-attend’ events for retailers at NRF. It offers unparalleled insight into the retail technology trends and strategies that are shaping the future of retail, and it unites the retail industry to provide relief to the neediest and vulnerable children in the world," said Greg Buzek, founder of IHL Group and donor trustee for RetailROI.

Since its founding four years ago, the Retail Orphan Initiative has helped over 110,000 orphaned and vulnerable children through education, computers, food and medical care, funded primarily through SuperSaturday. Over 94% of the funds have been used in direct support of charities that provide hands-on relief around the world for orphan care, adoption relief, foster care support, and rescue of children from human trafficking.

Sporting goods chain offers underwater Christmas with Santa

BY CSA STAFF

LA CANADA, Calif. — Santa Claus is coming to Sport Chalet, a sporting goods retailer, to take photos with everyone, young and old, under water.

No experience is necessary for fans to pose with Santa, who will be at the store from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, December 15. Sport Chalet dive experts will be on hand to assist Santa fans, who must be at least 10 years old to dive. Younger children need not despair, however, as they will be able to snorkel alongside St. Nick for their photo.

Starbucks, Amsterdam

BY CSA STAFF

Starbucks blends tradition with innovation, transforming the vault of the historic Amsterdamsche Bank, a landmark building in Rembrandt Square, into its largest store in Europe. The chain’s first “concept” store in Europe, it spans 4,500 sq. ft. and was conceived as a theatre space with a 57-foot coffee bar as its stage, with multi-level areas that provide stages for local bands, poetry readings and other cultural activities. The store will function as a test space for rare and exclusive coffees, diverse coffee brewing methods, and new food concepts.

Starbucks employed local artists (more than 35 local artists and craftspeople worked under the direction of Starbucks concept design director Liz Muller) and used indigenous materials as much as possible in creating the space. As with all Starbucks concept stores, the Amsterdam one offers a significant aesthetic departure, with witty local design touches and built with sustainable materials. Among other things, it features a floor-to-ceiling ‘tattooed’ mural celebrating the history of Dutch coffee traders, repurposed Dutch oak throughout the space, antique Delft blue tiles, a ceiling sculpture created from 1,876 hand-cut wooden blocks, and a wall clad in recycled bicycle inner tubes. The ceiling features a relief composed of 1,876 hand-cut and stained wooden blocks forming the face of Starbucks’ signature Siren. It was built under LEED guidelines to reduce the impact on the environment.

When I have been in Holland I had the opportunity to visit the Starbucks shop from Amsterdam, I wanted to try as many types of dutch cheese and my niece showed me a restaurant where I could do this. The vacation I had in Amsterdam was amazing, I will go there the next week with my family.
