Sephora to unveil totally mobile checkout in Manhattan
New York City — Sephora is opening a store in Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District that will feature a completely mobile checkout system, Women’s Wear Daily reported. The 5,000-sq.-ft. store, which will not have a traditional checkout counter, is due to open on Sept. 16.
The company plans to rollout the new system in some 50 locations by yearend, according to the report.
Topshop opens in Chicago
New York City — British apparel retailer Acadia Group opened its second Topshop/Topman location in the United States, a three-level store on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. The space, which boasts some 35,000 sq. ft. of selling space, was previously was occupied by a Borders store.
Topshop will debut its third U.S. location, in Las Vegas, in March 2012.
Survey: 27% of Americans to spend less on 2011 holiday
New York City — Most than a quarter of Americans expect to spend less during the holidays this year, according to a survey by American’s Research Group, Reuters reported.
About 27% of people surveyed said they planned to spend less this year, while about 55% expect to spend only as much as last year. The question was one of several asked exclusively for Reuters as part of a larger America’s Research Group survey.
More than half of those surveyed said they expected the economy to slow further before it recovers. Only about 18% of Americans plan to spend more this holiday season, down from 23% last year.
