Shopko in Facebook promotion

New York — Shopko is leveraging social media to promote its expanded assortment of national brands. The retailer is holding an eight-week Facebook contest offering participants a chance to win prize packages associated with the featrued brands.

"Shopko’s merchandise team evaluates our brand and product assortment on a consistent basis to ensure we are offering our customers the brands they want at a great value," said Jill Soltau, Shopko president and chief merchandising officer. "We offer a wide variety of popular national brands and we are excited to share best-selling products from these brands with eight lucky Facebook winners."

The enter, participants must go to Shopko’s Facebook page and “Like” it so they can watch for posts on the featured brand of the week. Shopko also encourages participants to share with others, thus growing the retailer’s network. Full details of the weekly prize package and promotion with terms and conditions can be found on the Facebook page as well.

One winner will be randomly selected every Friday and announced on the following Monday.

Gap Q4 outlook tops expectations amid strong January

San Francisco — Gap Inc. posted strong sales for January and issued a fourth-quarter profit forecast that topped expectations.

The retailer said its same-store sales rose 1% in January. Analysts had expected a drop of 1.3%. Net sales for the four weeks that ended Feb. 1 were $899 million, compared with net sales of $1.13 billion for the five-week period ended Feb. 2, 2013.

For the fourth quarter, net sales were $4.58 billion, compared with $4.73 billion a year earlier.

This year’s January and fourth quarter had one less week than last year’s.

"We’re pleased to deliver a strong finish to the year, with another month and quarter of comp sales growth," said chairman and CEO Glenn Murphy in a statement.

KKR & Co. to acquire National Vision Inc.

New York — Private equity firm KKR & Co. will acquire National Vision Inc. from Berkshire Partners.

National Vision, which focuses on low-cost glasses and contacts, operates more than 750 retail locations under names that include America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses and Eyeglass World. It also has stores inside Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Fred Meyer, and military bases.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The management team of National Vision is expected to remain a significant investor in the company, KKR said.
