Six Stater Bros. stores receive EPA GreenChill Gold Award

BY Staff Writer

San Bernardino, Calif. — In celebration of Earth Day, Stater Bros. said that six of the company’s newest supermarkets in California have earned the prestigious EPA GreenChill Gold Award for meeting tough environmental standards and using ozone-friendly refrigerants. The certifications are good for one year. Four of the locations also received GreenChill Gold Awards in 2011 (Grand Terrace, Moreno Valley, Cathedral City and Carlsbad).

Stater Bros. is the only Southern California grocer to have six stores that are certified at the Gold Level.

In 2009, Stater Bros. introduced a "Green Waste" composting program in all its supermarket locations to turn organic waste into compost that is sold to area farmers. The chain received a Waste Reduction Award in both 2011 and 2010 from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP).

McDonald’s goes Vegas

BY Marianne Wilson

Las Vegas — McDonald’s has opened its first and only location under the Metro McDonald’s banner, in downtown Las Vegas.

The two-level, 6,734-sq.-ft. space is located on Las Vegas Boulevard, next to Planet Hollywood Resort Casino’s Miracle Mile Shops. The new McDonald’s boasts 24-hour service, digital menu boards and WiFi access. The contemporary-looking interior is bright and vibrant, with sleek furniture and graffiti-like murals.

"We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind restaurant that complements the current metropolitan landscape and character of Las Vegas," said Josephine Wee, Rocky Mountain Operations Manager for McDonald’s USA.

While almost 90% of McDonald’s restaurants are independent franchises, the new Las Vegas store is corporate owned.
