Smack Sportswear opens first flagship

BY Marianne Wilson

Torrance, Calif. — Smack Sportswear, manufacturer of indoor and beach volleyball apparel, announced that its first flagship officially opened its doors on Feb. 23.

The store, in Huntington Beach, Calif., sits inside of the former Huntington Beach Training Center, which has since been renamed the "Smack Center." It houses eight indoor volleyball courts and three Futsal (indoor football) courts. Smack’s flagship store offers curb appeal to the thousands of coaches, teams, and visitors to the facility.

"Store sales in our first year of operations are expected to add around $200,000 to $300,000 to our top-line growth in 2013. But higher revenue growth is expected as we form relationships with our core target market —the coaches and owners who require uniforms and equipment for hundreds of players," said Bill Sigler, CEO of Smack.

The Smack store sells a wide range of Smack indoor, beach, and casual apparel, as well as equipment, footwear, and gear from major brands like Nike, Asics, and others. It also features an interactive "Online Design Center" that lets Smack customers design their own custom uniforms and place online orders.

NRF backs legislation to repeal health care employer mandate

BY Staff Writer

Washington — The National Retail Federation this week welcomed introduction of House and Senate legislation that would repeal the employer mandate provision of the health care reform law scheduled to take effect next year.

“Eliminating the employer mandate would greatly aid the retail community, which is heavily dependent on labor,” NRF SVP David French said. “One of every four jobs in the American economy is supported by retail, which would be jeopardized by the mandate effective in 2014. The employer mandate is already deterring job growth today at the expense of tomorrow’s economy.”

NRF is currently focused on helping retailers prepare to comply with the Affordable Care Act, but continues to have “myriad concerns and objections to” the law, French said.

French’s comments came in letters to Representative Charles W. Boustany Jr., R-La., and Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah. The lawmakers are the lead sponsors of the American Job Protection Act, which would strike provisions in the ACA requiring employers with 50 or more full-time workers to provide health insurance at government-mandated levels or pay large penalties if they fail to do so.

NRF has argued that increased employment costs brought on by the employer mandate will force some companies to reduce the size of their payrolls and discourage small companies in particular from growing to the 50-employee threshold. NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay emphasized the job implications in a joint op-ed published last week.

Health care systems are
Health care systems are getting mandatory for every employee especially in the United States of America; under the act of Affordable Health Act or Obamacare Act we have found several possible circumstances that are providing beneficial health care services to the people of America and make the future health secure through various health insurance coverage plans. But due to rapid rise of health care cost most of the companies are forced to reduce their employee's payrolls that ultimately affects the health care systems of the country. find urgent care

Office Depot HQ earns EPA’s Energy Star certification for second consecutive year

BY Marianne Wilson

Boca Raton, Fla. — Office Depot announced that the company’s global headquarters, located in Boca Raton, Fla., has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for the second consecutive year. The certification signifies the building performs in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency.

"As part of Office Depot’s commitment to be greener, we continue to invest in energy efficiency,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, senior director of environmental strategy for Office Depot. "By pursuing EPA’s Energy Star as well as the LEED Gold certification we already have at our headquarters, we further demonstrate our commitment to third party verification of environmental claims.”

Commercial buildings that earn the Energy Star certification use an average of 35% less energy than typical buildings and also release 35% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Energy-saving actions that Office Depot took to earn the Energy Star certification at its headquarters included:

  • Changing 15,000 lights from 32 watt T5 lamps to more efficient 27 watt T5 lamps for the building interior;
  • Changing parking garage lamps from 150-watt metal-halide to 42-Watt fluorescents;
  • Reducing the number of lamps on during the daylight hours by 70%; and
  • Reducing standard building operating hours from 66 hours to 60 hours per week.

By using some of the savings enabled by these measures, Office Depot purchased sufficient Renewable Energy Credits to establish its global headquarters as Carbon Neutral for 2012. In addition, Office Depot was recently recognized as an Energy Star Leader for 2012, having become the first large retailer in the United States to achieve a verified portfolio-wide energy reduction of over 30% (compared to 2004).
