South America’s largest retailer selects SAP solution to help manage carbon emissions and energy consumption
New York City — The Grupo Pao de Acucar, the largest retailer in South America, has selected the SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand solution to monitor and manage carbon emissions and energy consumption in each of its 1,832 stores. The solution, from SAP, will help the group, long recognized as a sustainability leader for retailers both in Latin America and globally, to more effectively control greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase the data quality of environmental reports submitted to financial and sustainability regulatory agencies.
The announcement was made at the National Retail Federation’s 101st Annual Convention & Expo, being held Jan. 15-18 in New York City.
Since 2008, The Grupo Pao de Acucar has been committed to sustainable business practices, including reducing waste, encouraging recycling and re-use of recycled materials, and developing sustainable products and production processes. SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand will help the company mitigate its environmental footprint and further its sustainability goals.
"Before selecting SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand, we used an external firm to collect and report on this information," said Hugo Bethlem, VP, The Grupo Pao de Acucar. "The new solution will allow us to bring this process in-house, making it more efficient and providing us with more operational control. We will gain both valuable insight and a robust tool for proactively managing emissions and energy consumption. The Grupo Pao de Acucar will be one of the first retail companies in Latin America to inventory its carbon emissions. From this measurement, we will be able to create plans to reduce the GHG emissions and carbon footprint of our operations."
McDonald’s awarded LEED Gold
Riverside, Calif. — A McDonald’s restaurant in Riverside, Calif., has been LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified. It is the chain’s first location west of the Mississippi, and only the fourth in the United States, to receive the prestigious designation. Other LEED-certified McDonald’s restaurants are located in Cary, N.C., Savannah, Ga. and Chicago.
The restaurant, the first LEED Gold certified restaurant in the city of Riverside, is owned and operated by Tom and Candace Spiel and stood as a McDonald’s for 44 years. In August 2010, it was completely rebuilt and subsequently reopened with a host of "green" features, including low-flow plumbing fixtures, recycled denim insulation inside the building, native drought tolerant plants to reduce water consumption by landscape and solar panels.
The restaurant’s solar array has generated electrical energy, which saves approximately 8,950 kWH per month of utility usage. Increased efficiencies such as low-E glass windows and LED lighting helped realize an additional energy savings of 2,870 kWH per month.
Due to permeable pavers, about 283,000 gallons of rainfall water is diverted from storm water system per year.
The restaurant also includes an interactive touchscreen display for visitors to learn about the building’s features, environmental sustainability, and how individuals can reduce their carbon footprint.
Ikea to install solar panels on five locations in Midwest
Conshohocken, Pa. — Ikea said Thursday it plans to install solar energy panels on five more of its U.S. locations – all of them in the Midwest. Installation is slated for summer 2012 completion and will expand Ikea’s solar presence to nearly 85% of its U.S. locations.
Collectively, the five stores will total 4.8 megawatts of solar generating capacity, approximately 20,400 panels, and an annual output of 5.62 million kilowatt hours of electricity – the equivalent to reducing 4,273 tons of carbon dioxide – equal to eliminating the emissions of 760 cars or providing electricity for 484 homes yearly.
Ikea will own and operate each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings – as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement – now including its two Chicago-area stores as well as stores in Bloomington, Minn., Canton, Mich., and Pittsburgh.
Ikea already has 12 U.S. solar energy systems operational with 20 more underway. Installing solar panels atop these five locations will increase the company’s U.S. solar presence to nearly 85% and will result in a total generating capacity of 31.6 MW in the United States.
