Starbucks expands Starbucks cards to China
Seattle — Starbucks is introducing Starbucks gift cards at select locations in mainland China. Starbucks cards can be purchased in three design themes, including Thank You, Kind Regards and Happy Lunar New Year.
“The Lunar New Year is a time when family and friends gather to meet, connect and share stories,” said Belinda Wong, president, Starbucks China. [All of the cards] can be used at our stores in mainland China year-round.”
Since the Starbucks Card launched 12 years ago, $16 billion (U.S. dollars) has been loaded on more than 450 million cards in 27 countries worldwide (as of Sept. 30, 2013).
“The Starbucks Card has become a symbol of appreciation and human connection around the world,” said Adam Brotman, chief digital officer for Starbucks. “We are thrilled to be able to now offer Starbucks Cards to our customers in China.”
Timed to the launch of the Starbucks Gift Card in China, Starbucks is also offering a Lunar New Year Gift Card in participating Starbucks stores in the U.S. The Card celebrates the horse, this year’s honored animal of the Lunar New Year.
Report – Wal-Mart recalls fake donkey meat in China
Bentonville, Ark. — Wal-Mart is reportedly recalling donkey meat it sells in China after testing revealed the meat contained fox DNA. According to Bloomberg, Wal-Mart detected fox DNA in samples of donkey meat from Chinese supplier Dezhou Fujude Food Company Ltd., and has since withdrawn all products from the company from its shelves.
Wal-Mart will reportedly now add DNA testing to all meat products it sells in China, where counterfeit meat products are an issue. Wal-Mart is planning to offer compensation to customers who bought the counterfeit donkey meat. In 2012, Wal-Mart was cited by Chinese authorities for selling sesame oil and squid with hazardous chemical levels. Dezhou Fujude officials are reportedly in criminal detention as a result of the incident and the company declined comment in the article.
“Walmart will spare no effort in fulfilling its obligations as a retailer and in working with government authorities in their investigation,” Greg Foran, president and CEO of Wal-Mart China, said in a statement. “Walmart commits to further enhance sample testing in the future.”
Jamba Juice plans Middle East expansion
Emeryville, Calif. — Jamba Juice Company has entered into a master franchise development agreement with Foodmark, the food and beverage division of Landmark Group, to develop 80 Jamba Juice stores across the Middle East region during the next 10 years. The first Jamba Juice store is expected to open in Dubai in 2014.
Foodmark operates several restaurant concepts and brands in the region.
