Starbucks to open 1,500 new stores in U.S. by 2017

BY Marianne Wilson

New York — Starbucks Coffee Co. is moving ahead full-steam. The company on Wednesday announced accelerated global growth plans that include opening at least 1,500 stores in the United States during the next five years. Including Canada and South America in the mix, Starbucks expects to add a total of 3,000 new locations in its Americas region — and renovate thousands more — by 2017.

Speaking at Starbucks’ 2012 Investor Conference, Cliff Burrows, president of Starbucks Americas and U.S., also announced plans to leverage the company’s recently completed Evolution Fresh and La Boulange acquisitions by making La Boulange products available in more than 2,500 U.S. company-operated Starbucks stores and making Evolution Fresh juices available in more than 5,000 U.S. company-operated stores by the end of 2013.

Starbucks is also looking to take a leadership position in the global tea market with its intended acquisition of Teavana. Once the deal is complete, Starbucks plans to continue to grow Teavana’s 300 mall-based stores, as well as add a high-profile neighborhood store concept that will accelerate Teavana’s domestic and global footprint.

On the global front, the company announced that China is on track to become its largest market outside of the U.S. in 2014. The company is on plan to have 1,500 stores in 70 cities throughout the country in 2015. In the overall China and Asia-Pacific region, Starbucks will approach 4,000 stores by the end of 2013, including its first store in Vietnam.

The company also reaffirmed plans to open its first store in Delhi, India, in early 2013, following the successful opening of its first three locations in Mumbai, India, in October 2012.

“Starbucks business and brand have never been healthier, and as a company we have never been better positioned to execute against our global, multichannel growth agenda,” Starbucks chairman, president and CEO Howard Schultz said at the company’s conference. “Starbucks will have more than 20,000 retail stores on six continents by 2014 and more than 200,000 points of global CPG distribution by 2015

On the digital front, Starbucks expects its mobile payment platform to account for 10% of payments in Starbucks U.S. stores by the end of fiscal 2013.

Macy’s to help last-minute shoppers race against the clock

BY CSA STAFF

NEW YORK — Last minute holiday shoppers will have some help from Macy’s this year, as the retailer plans keep most of its stores open 48 hours straight the weekend before Christmas, from 7 a.m. Friday, December 21 through 7 a.m. Sunday, December 23.

The 48-hour shopping marathon coincides with Macy’s final scheduled One-Day Sale of the year, which concludes at 7 a.m. Sunday, December 23. While the sale ends Sunday morning, 57 stores will remain open 24 hours or offer extended late hours until close on Christmas Eve.

With Thanksgiving falling on November 22, consumers this year will have a total of 32 shopping days, counting Christmas Eve, and no real excuse for last-minute shopping. But the holiday does have a way of sneaking up on some shoppers, and others simply like the adrenaline rush of a last-minute shopping marathon.

"For the first time ever, Macy’s will keep most stores open around the clock for the last weekend of holiday shopping, an expansion of our successful marathon that began at select stores in 2006," said Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief stores officer. “We hope to make it easy for our customers across the country to finish their shopping at any time of day or night, and with the benefit of the great deals and value they count on from our One Day Sale events."

Macy’s began the tradition of keeping its doors open 24 hours with Macy’s Queens Center in 2006. Macy’s added additional stores in subsequent years, and last year offered customers the opportunity to shop outside regular store hours in 14 locations that were open 24 hours and in 27 locations that offered extended hours.

Setting up an iPad Kiosk With iOS 6: Five Easy Steps

BY CSA STAFF

By Kevin Hart, Tekserve

Take a look around your store. Somewhere, likely near the register, there’s a clipboard where you collect customer email addresses for your mailing list. You probably think this clipboard method is the most efficient way to collect this information since it’s worked for you up to this point. Or has it? Do you really have the time to retype all of these email addresses? How many of those email addresses are actually illegible? It may be time for you to upgrade from your paper data collection process to an iPad.

With the iPad filling a growing role in our work and personal lives, it’s a logical next step for retailers to use these increasingly familiar devices to interact with consumers in the form of a mobile kiosk. It was a laborious process to transform an iPad into a kiosk prior to the launch of iOS 6. It was possible, but required special profiles to be installed onto the device, which was complicated for the average user.

One of the lesser-known features introduced in iOS 6 is Guided Access. Hidden deep within the Settings page, this new feature is designed to help children and students with disabilities stay focused while using iOS devices. By allowing an administrator to limit access to specified portions of the touchscreen and deactivate hardware buttons, Guided Access is also a great new tool for setting up an iPad kiosk on the fly. Using Guided Access, a retailer can easily turn off all hardware buttons so no one can switch apps or put the iPad to sleep. The feature also allows restricted access to the settings button within the app, so customers can only access the app the retailer wants them to see. Utilizing these features, a retailer can focus the consumer on one particular app to accomplish their intended goal, for example, gathering customer contact details or assisting the customer in finding additional product information.

Here’s a basic walkthrough of how Guided Access works and how to set up an iPad kiosk:

1. In the Settings app, navigate to General > Accessibility, and then tap Guided Access;
2. Switch it on using the toggle, and then set a passcode (it doesn’t have to be the same as the device passcode);
3. Navigate to the app you want to restrict and press the Home button three times quickly;
4. A screen will pop up where settings can be configured — the user can turn off hardware buttons, motion, and touch control, and even circle areas of the screen that they want to disable; and
5. To turn Guided Access off, press the home button again three times, enter the passcode, and tap “End.”

That’s it – just five easy steps. Now your retail customers can use iPads to collect and distribute valuable information to consumers like never before. Not only is the set up process simple for retailers, but using these familiar devices can serve as another way for a company to be more relatable to its audience – and gather important customer data along the way.
