Consumer confidence in January falls to 14-month low

BY Katherine Boccaccio

New York City –A report released Tuesday by The Conference Board showed that confidence among U.S. consumers fell in January to its lowest point since November 2011.

The Conference Board’s index decreased to 58.6, down from a revised 66.7 in December. The figure was lower than forecast; Bloomberg predicted a median of 64.

The drop in confidence coincides with the 2% payroll tax increase used to fund Social Security.

“The thing that’s particularly troubling is the sizable decline in expectations,” Guy Lebas, chief fixed-income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC told Bloomberg. “As those expectations deteriorate, it doesn’t bode particularly well for day-to-day consumer spending.”

The 8.1-point slump from December to January is the biggest since August 2011, and parallels other measures of consumer confidence. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index dropped in the week ended Jan. 20 to the lowest level since early October and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment dropped in January to its lowest point since December 2011.

Saks to leave Dallas Galleria, Belk moving in

BY Katherine Boccaccio

New York City –Saks Inc. announced Tuesday it will shutter its Saks Fifth Avenue store in the Dallas Galleria on June 15. The retailer has operated a store in Dallas since 1982, and the summer closing will leave some 120 associates with the choice of transfer or severance.

Simultaneous with the Saks departure announcement was news from department store chain Belk that it will fill the vacated Galleria space with a $20-million, 170,000-sq.-ft. flagship store that starts construction in July and is slated to open spring 2014.

Saks had already closed its Austin store, and now operates only Saks Off Fifth outlet stores (three) in the Dallas-Fort Worth trade area. The retailer still has full-line department stores in Houston and San Antonio.

“The planned closing of our Dallas store is consistent with our strategy of employing our resources in our most productive locations,” said Steve Sadove, CEO, Saks. “We regularly assess the productivity, profitability, and potential of each of our store locations and may determine that a closing is appropriate from time to time.”
