Survey: One-in-four retail employees plan to change jobs in 2014

Chicago — Twenty-four percent of full-time retail employees plan to change jobs in 2014, three points above the average for all workers (21%) and up from 20% in 2013. According to a new survey from Harris Interactive, CareerBuilder and WorkInRetail.com, 51% of retail workers are satisfied with their jobs, down from 60% in 2013.

In addition, 22% are dissatisfied, up from 17% in 2013. For the three-out-of-four (76%) retail workers who have no intention of leaving their current job in 2014, a variety of factors weigh into their decision, with relationships with co-workers (59%), work/life balance (49%) and benefits (43%) topping the list.

“When workers are confident they can find a better job elsewhere, it’s a sign the labor market is improving,” said Rob Morris, director of WorkInRetail.com. “As a result, employers must double-down on efforts to retain top talent. Managers should listen carefully to employee feedback, implement incentive rewards, and consistently recognize strong performance. Reducing turnover builds cohesive teams that lead to positive customer service results and higher sales.”

Nordstrom begins work on Pennsylvania fulfillment center

Seattle – Nordstrom plans to open its third fulfillment center at Conewago Industrial Park in Elizabethtown, Pa. Work has begun on the approximately 672,000-sq.-ft. building, with an additional 470,000-square foot mezzanine, which is scheduled to open in summer 2015, and the company is taking bids.

In its first three years, the new fulfillment center will offer nearly 400 full-time positions and additional opportunities for part-time and seasonal roles. In the future, Nordstrom expects to increase hiring up to 700 full-time roles or more as the business continues to grow.

The fulfillment center will enable faster delivery for Nordstrom.com, Nordstrom mobile app and Nordstrom catalog orders, particularly for those from customers on the East Coast. The new facility joins the company’s existing fulfillment centers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and San Bernardino, Calif. Since 2009, Nordstrom has operated with an integrated inventory platform between its stores and online, as well as the ability to fulfill online orders from any of its 117 full-line stores across the country.

The fulfillment center is located at Conewago Industrial Park, which is owned by Martin and William Murray, and will be built by H&M Company, Inc. Jones Lang LaSalle served as the broker for Nordstrom.

"This is an ideal location to add to our fulfillment capabilities and improve the delivery experience for our customers. E-commerce is the fastest growing area of our business and this is another example of how we’re investing in people and capabilities to help us support this growth and responding to our customers’ changing definition of service."

Kroger promotes two veteran execs

Cincinnati – The Kroger Co. has promoted two veteran company executives. Jay Cummins has been named president of the Smith’s Food and Drug Stores division and Joe Fey has been named president of Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic division.

Cummins, 62, has been serving as president of Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic division. He succeeds Mark Tuffin, who was named senior VP of retail divisions in December 2013.

"In his more than 40 years with the company, Jay has been an enthusiastic and passionate leader in each role he has held," said Mike Ellis, Kroger’s president and COO. "Jay’s experience and commitment to our customer first strategy will ensure Smith’s continues to go above and beyond for our customers."
