Survey: A third of consumers will consider layaway for holiday shopping

Whiting, Ind. — A survey of 2,339 shoppers by CouponCabin.com found that 34% are at least somewhat likely to purchase items on layaway this holiday season.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, also found that 9% are very likely to use layaway; 29% said maybe.

When asked what they believe are the benefits to using a layaway program for holiday shopping, U.S. adults said the following:

  • 54% said layaway helps them to buy larger items that they couldn’t afford to buy all at once;
  • 52% said it helps with budgeting;
  • 46% said it helps them avoid using credit cards;
  • 43% said it helps to with planning ahead;
  • 43% like being able to reserve a popular item; and
  • 33% said they don’t need to have good credit to use layaway programs.

"Layaway can be a smart option for holiday shoppers on a budget, as it forces shoppers to be disciplined about saving and reduces impulse purchases," said Jackie Warrick, president and CEO at CouponCabin.com.

Men’s Wearhouse teams with TheKnot.com

Fremont, Calif. — The Men’s Wearhouse and online wedding site The Knot Wedding Network announced Wednesday that Men’s Wearhouse will be the exclusive tuxedo provider for TheKnot.com.

The new arrangement will give brides-to-be the opportunity to view and interact with Men’s Wearhouse brand-name tuxedo merchandise at an early stage of the wedding planning process.

"As the largest tuxedo rental service company in North America, we are excited to announce this formalwear marketing relationship with the number one wedding planning resource, TheKnot.com," said Doug Ewert, Men’s Wearhouse CEO.

The agreement will also give users access to Men’s Wearhouse Build-A-Tux tool on Menswearhouse.com, which facilitates online conceptualization and coordination of various tuxedo combinations.

I can only be glad about it, it's a win-win situation for all of us. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard similar news from wedding bombonieres businesses. If they keep interacting like this it will be so easy to organize a wedding in the future.

Bon-Ton to close Elder-Beerman location in Springfield, Ohio

York, Pa. — The Bon-Ton Stores said Wednesday it will close its Elder-Beerman store in Springfield, Ohio. The company will not renew the lease, which terminates January 31, 2013.

Bon-Ton acquired the leasehold interests in the Springfield store as part of the Elder-Beerman acquisition in 2003.
